If you were a kid in the 1960s who loved history and toy soldiers, you probably had a WOW figure!

Here is GHQ's model of HMS Hamadryad, formerly the Spanish frigate Ninfa. She was captured in 1797 on the Spanish coast, along with another frigate, by the 74 gun HMS Irresistible and the 36 gun HMS Emerald, and taken in to British service.

She went down in a storm on Christmas day of the same year, and I think it's quite possible the model is therefore cursed. I had very nearly put the finishing touches on it when she flew right out of my hands and landed upside down on the floor wrecking the rigging. Obviously a curse must be at fault, not any clumsiness on my part…..

Well, here she is after repairs. More photos here:

Why, of course! I've used the same excuse, uh… alibi, uh… rationale (that's it!) on many occasion! grin

She is as beautiful as the nymph after whom she is named.

Very nice! Who makes the ratlines?

whitejamest01 Apr 2016 6:09 a.m. PST

Thanks jgibbons, the ratlines are photo-etched brass from Langton Miniatures.

Jame you do do nice ships. I must send you some photos of my 1-2400 ships. Sorry for being a bad friend and not e-mailing you. Could it be old age that left her on the floor. I'm finding it harder to work on models as my left thumb is now not working as well as it did a year ago.

No apologies Rory! I'm always glad to see your lovely work, but don't you feel any requirement at all. I'm sorry to hear about your thumb, that is not pleasant. Hopefully with time it will improve though. For what it's worth, any time I have any kind of joint complaint, I take turmeric capsules for a while (or just mix copious amounts of the powder into hot milk and sweeten) and it helps a lot.

I wonder if we need a "Model-makers' Maladies" board to crosspost to?

Volunteer Fezian01 Apr 2016 10:44 p.m. PST

Yeah we need a Geezer board! All in favor say "oww".

Another perfect ship from a master!
