Very nice, I didn't realize this was in BSF until I read the article, I'd assumed it was Fine Ultra Detail or something similar, you did a good job covering up the graininess. I also like the rust effect! |

Wow! That looks terrific. I need some of these for East Africa. |

Has anyone tried spraying with a gloss coat or washing with watered down glue to smooth out the pebbled surface? |

I have used spray primer with success. |

Thanks Guys, "Has anyone tried spraying with a gloss coat or washing with watered down glue to smooth out the pebbled surface?" That's an interesting idea Schogun. I believe the matte varnish seals the models so that you don't get the paint soaking in. I'm going to try and do that with the Carden and then spray or try a spray undercoat to smooth it out a bit. I think that combined with normal painting should go pretty close to doing it. The model you see is pretty close up. On table you really can't tell th difference and it looks pretty good ;-) Cheers |

I have painted a few Shapeways vehicles. I thought between the primer and paint that the pebbled surface would go away. Although improved, it's still there. So I wondered what else I could try before priming. The other option is localized sanding. Your Vickers looks really good, btw. |

Thanks Schogun. I painted up the little Carden Loyd carrier and used a Vallejo undercoat. It certainly smooths out the surface somewhat and I'm pretty pleased with the result. I'll pop up a pic when I get to it but I think it does the job. I've since undercoated the two Vickers Mk III tanks and they look good to go for painting. Cheers Happy W |

Nice one Storyforu ;-) Here's a pic of the Carden Loyd. This one has the Vallejo black undercoat and then painted on top. Overall, I think it did a god job of smoothing out the textured WSF surface.

Thinking of "Early Dad's Army." Anyone know if some of these were hauled out of stage, refurbished as much as practicable, and rushed to the Kent and Sussex Coast after Dunkirk? It makes sense, in that as an example, there is proof in the form of a picture of a couple old Mk. IIA Mediums somewhere in Kent (IIRC) joined up with a Matilda II in the aftermath of Dunkirk. "All hands to the pumps" as it were? Any help?? I'd love to get a few of these but need a good excuse -- I'm not going to be gaming East Africa… |
