I guess it depends upon what you want, figures-wise.
I've got some figs from Essex, and a few others, and they are nicely cast.
Back in the day, many decades ago, I wanted some foot knights for the French, in order to do Agincourt, and Essex had few options – the few offered were in very static poses.
Doing a little research, I found out about the Minifigs range, and back before the internet and easy access to photos of them (yes, I am a dinosaur, AND yes, there was life before the internet, though we barely survived……), they published a paper catalog with nice line drawings of some of their figures, so I ordered a few packs based upon that (would love to see images of that catalog again).
When I received them, I was very pleased.
They're a little thinner, and taller than the Essex figs, the latter of which are more like true 15mm figs, but they look very nice, and many of the poses are more dynamic than those from Essex.
Not sure I'd mix the two ranges in the same units, but apparently some people do. I'd say the Minifigs run about 16.5mm – 17mm, whereas the Essex are 15mms, by my measurement.
I find the Essex minis to be a bit more rotund and squat compared to the Minifigs figures, which seem to me to be better proportioned.
What I really like about the Essex figs are the variety of poses and weapons, as well as the option to purchase many different helmet styles for your men at arms and knights (armets, hounskulls, bascinets, etc., etc., and swords, maces, poleaxes, etc., etc.). Also, you can purchase matching helms and weapons for both foot and mounted figs, which is nice. For the mounted, you can get lance-armed men, or those with the weapons mentioned above.
So, Minifigs are definitely worth a look, especially if you want/need French foot knights/men at arms. You can see some images of them on their website. They offer both early and late HYW figs too, e.g. Crecy/Poitiers, and Agincourt. There's also a Wars of the Roses, and early 16th Century, Italian Wars and later range as well.
Not sure which figs the Minifigs will match best with, if you seek to match them up with others, so perhaps some can comment on those further. Perhaps well with any 16.5 – 18mm tall figs.
