I was thinking about taking a road trip to Border Wars this year and was curious how big of a con it is? Can anyone rate the con for me? I am a historical gamer and was curious about the amount of historical games there.

Thanks – Allen

Hi, Allen. I used to go to Borderwars every time I could. I always had a great time there and felt welcomed by all. Really a relaxed time. There are many historical gamers that attend and put on some nice games. Today, I received this from Brian Beale, one of the organizers, in an email:

"
Victorian Sci-Fi May 13-15 in Kansas City

A three day game convention

Details at HAHMGS.org

HAHMGS Welcomes as our special guest, Steampunk Expert Terry Sofian

In the Hive and the Flame Alien Invaders meet the Thin Red Line of the
British Army. Using the well tested Sword and the Flame British Colonial
game engine and Eight Hundred Fighting Englishmen's mechanics for larger
scale battles The Hive and The Flame brings in the alien arthropods from
Terry Sofian's Hive, Queen and Country setting. Advanced Victorian
technology, backed up by the guts of rough British Tommies face off
against giant arthropods armed with claws and mandibles. Even Zulus and
Dervish can't match the selfless devotion these creatues show to The
Hive. Can the humans and their science and courage match biological
killing machines bred to cleanse a planet of all life?

Play with the game designer at Borderwars!

Can the allied human forces strike the final blow in the Second Hive
War? After years of brutal campaigning the forces of Earth's Great
Powers have first stopped the expansion and then forced back the swarms
of giant arthropods from the alien Hives in South America. Now only the
last Hive remains. A massive aerial assault with forces from the British
Empire, the Germano-Dutch League and the United States of America are
prepared to descend upon the top of the Hive at dawn. The aliens will
not allow this without a fight, all the remaining resources at their
disposal will be thrown into a desperate battle for the very survival of
the Hive itself.

Get a sneak peak of the terrain at hivequeenandcountry.com

The event will be run as a continuous battle from Friday Afternoon until
Saturday evening. Play for the whole thing, a single die roll; or just
come and watch. The rules are The Hive and the Flame, a major variant of
The Sword and the Flame."

I suspect Brian might be by here shortly.

If I were back in the USA, I'd try to make it. If you decide to go, please let us know here how you liked it.

Thanks.
Tom

I haven't been gone for several years due to work. But when I did go, I had fun.

Sorry I didn't see this till now.

I'd say we're 80-90% historical minis.

We cover all historical periods, including the conquest of Mars.

Just added some more games to the site: HAHMGS.org

and we usually get more games as we get closer to the date. Our members are famous for waiting till the last minute to send in thier games.

Unfortunately the DBA schism has 86's the ancient tournament. But that gives us more room for the aforementioned Hive game.

If you do stay at the hotel, make sure you get the 69.99 Toy Sojer rate and bring your swimming trunks for the indoor pool! (Clothing optional after 10pm Saturday)

ps-thanks for the kind words Tom. Come back soon!
