Any recommendations for a Vallejo green that can be used for Berdan's Sharpshooters? I typically paint one color, use Army Painter strong tone wash, then matt varnish. 28mm minis. Thanks Darren |

They have a color called Military Green. This is what I used in these pics.

FWIW, here's a link to an image of an original Berdan's dress coat. Note how dark the green is, with an almost emerald green piping. link |

Thanks Tim. I don't think the coat is that dark though. In that pick I think a lot of it is the lighting. If you look at the sleeve in the lower right corner where the light is actually hitting it, it is a much brighter green. Now imagine the whole coat in sunlight. At least that's my take on it. |

Well, here's some pics of another original coat for comparison.

Howard Hues has a Rifle Green which looks right. I'm going to try it. |

FWIW, the original jackets had black hard-rubber buttons from Goodyear. These were identical in shape to the US Army general service buttons, but made of hard rubber. Also, by Gettysburg, there was a fair amount of raggedness in the ranks of both units, with uniform parts, especially trousers, of the standard federal blue. Sack coats also found their way into the ranks, but in a smaller portion as the green coats didn't wear out as quickly as the trousers did. You'd also start to see a diminishing number of men with leggins and hide knapsacks, with the former not replaced and the latter with the black painted cloth federal issue patter knapsacks. Virtually all the canteens had a gray or mouse-brown cloth cover, most of jeancloth but some of wool, usually scrap blanket material. V/R |
