"The U.S. Air Force seems to have woken up to the fact that it can't simply retire the A-10 Thunderbolt II attack jet. The Air Force has waged a years-long campaign to scrap its A-10 fleet in a bid to save roughly $4 USD billion in operating costs. Service leaders have argued that the plane's close air support mission can be performed by existing platforms, including the B-1 bomber and the highly-anticipated F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. Related: Another F-35 Glitch Requires Restarting the Radar System – in Flight Those arguments have met stiff resistance on Capitol Hill. Last week Senate Armed Services Committee chair John McCain (R-AZ) castigated Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh over the lack of a viable substitute for the jet that has seen plenty of action in Iraq and Afghanistan…" Full article here link Amicalement Armand |

None of those listed are worthy "replacements" for the Warthog because they don't carry the GAU-8 rotary cannon. |

I say turn the A-10's into drones. Then I would either 1. Develop a medium weight drone with a high loitering time with an integral gun and a high payload or 2. use the Scorpion. Not that the scorpion is more survivable than the Tocano but having a propeller has bad ju-ju all over it. |

Actually, there are advantages to using a turboprop. Not least of which is thrust NOW, no delay for engines to spool up. Potentially-lower IR signature is another. |

@28mm Fanatik The replacement are meant for COIN and low intensity conflict so no GAU-8 is fine for me. If you happen to need guns like that in those situations an AC-130 would be a much better platform me think. And for high intensity conflict F-16s should probably do fine, with the added bonus of dumping bombs to defend itself if things got real bad in the air. |
