Here is a little battle report using the minis I have completed (which wasn't much, but enough for a game of Betrayal at Calth!). It's a Fire Hawks attempt to kill a Mantis Warriors captain on the nuclear wasteland world of Bellepheron's Fall (which saw vicious fighting during the Badab War).

Hope you enjoy! Click the link to see how it ends!

I also finished the first of my Mantis Warriors tactical squads. Here they are, ready for action.

Hope you guys have been enjoying the project! Thanks!

Very nice AAR. Love your figs and table.
That is very cool that you used the Betrayal rules, they are a very good 40k lite set. I read on your blog that you had created a special set of command cards for the game. Any chance of you uploading those? :-)

Great looking miniatures and table.

Pizzagrenadier16 Mar 2016 4:26 a.m. PST

Thanks guys!

Chasseur: Sure thing! I'm still working up the different chapters our group is playing, but I'll upload them all when I'm done. The Betrayal at Calth rules are the most fun I've had playing 40k in years. Great rules set.

Dragon Gunner16 Mar 2016 5:44 a.m. PST

I have the Betrayal at Calth rules how did you convert the hex based game to the table top?

By the way I agree a nice simple set of rules and with some minor tweaking you can create other forces.

I am waiting for Deathwatch Overkill to arrive to see which rule set I like better.

Pizzagrenadier16 Mar 2016 7:46 a.m. PST

Dragon Gunner: We just changed the hexes to 3" increments and gave the weapons normal 40k ranges. We kept the model bulk the same so models moved in groups of two or three as in BaC. Other than that it played the same.

I did make some custom Command Cards for both Loyalists and Secessionists and I'll post them for download some time soon. I'm working up the cards for some of the different chapters with their own special rules. The special rules are really simple twists on the existing rules in BaC and are all based on the lore of the chapters involved and the Badab War itself.

For example, the Mantis Warriors tactical squad can take a scoped Bolt Gun (Tranquility Pattern) that allows that model to reroll blank dice once during shooting.

I'm really happy with how the rules are playing and with how the Badab flavor is working out.

I am excited to pick up and try Overkill as well, but that won't be until later this summer. If you get it, let us know how it plays :)

Dragon Gunner: Here's the Command Cards I made to use for BaC. I'll be adding a few of the chapters as I finish them. Are there any chapters you're interested in?

Those miniatures and table are fantastic. Being a long time fan of the Badab war myself, I was both excited at the Forge World book release when it happened and subsequently disappointed at the edition change which happened fairly soon after. Thanks for giving me a reason to love my books once again. I own BaC and your rules adaptations look like it will fit the bill for a relatively quick and flavorful game. Do you intend to do custom cards for all of the factions or just the ones your group plays?

Pizzagrenadier17 Mar 2016 5:21 p.m. PST

Thanks for the compliments Moonbeast!

I will be working on cards for the chapters our group is playing to start, but I could also do others if there is interest. Which chapters are you thinking?

I really enjoy working these chapters up and adding lore flavor to them. I base some of the rules on the quotes and chapter personalities whenever I can.

Moonbeast17 Mar 2016 8:02 p.m. PST

I have both the Salamanders and Executioners, and the rest of my group have the Astral Claws, Red Scorpions, Carcharodons and Howling Griffons. The Brutal savagery of the Corcyran massacre being an interesting battle which I think BaC will allow us to play out fantastically.

"I really enjoy working these chapters up and adding lore flavor to them. I base some of the rules on the quotes and chapter personalities whenever I can."

And I (and my group) thank you for taking the time and effort to share your efforts.

Thanks for making these cards available. Very kind of you and good work. They will help me quite a bit in making my own.

BTW, I played Overkill last week and I have to say it was not as nearly as interesting as Betrayal. It was essentially Space Hulk without the blips, the passageways and the stress of the timer. Possibly, we need to play it some more, but at this point, I am glad I did not buy it. Give me Betrayal any day.

Pizzagrenadier18 Mar 2016 9:53 a.m. PST

Moonbeast: Thanks, and No problem. I had already planned on doing the Astral Claws and Red Scorpions anyway. I'll add those other chapters to my list. I think the Fire Hawks and Lamenters will be done by this Weekend, then I'll shift focus to the Astral Claws and Red Scorpions to give you guys something to use until I'm finished the rest. Now that I have the basic template, doing the rest should be easy.

Let me know how they work when you use them. They're not tested for balance, so I can't promise they will always make for a fair game :)

Though the main reason I make the perks and traits pretty basic and as minor bonuses in the first place is to keep things more easily balanced.

Chasseur: Thanks! I had thought Overkill was going to be a Space Hulk type system. That's not necessarily bad, but like you, I think I'll stick with BaC. I'll be picking up Overkill purely for the miniatures. I can't pass up the chance to do a Genestealer cult with those beautiful models.

If you guys have any questions on the files or anything, you can get a hold of me at keith_stine at Yahoo dot com.

Thanks! Hope you guys enjoy!

Pizzagrenadier18 Mar 2016 11:03 a.m. PST

Edit: Made some changes, fixes, and added a new Secessionist card to the file.

Dragon Gunner18 Mar 2016 7:19 p.m. PST

The cards are great what I would really like to see is a slightly more detailed battle report emphasizing the conversion of hexes to inches. How do you keep track of things like the "Consolidate Move" without hexes?

This is a nice simple set of rules for my gaming buddies that have little patience but still need some tactical finesse to be entertained.

I was considering doing exactly the same thing you have done with the rules even jotted down a few ideas. Some examples for Imperial Guard…

Lasgun 1 dice / Critical result roll another die. (Makes the lasgun weaker than a bolter but still has a chance to drop a marine in PA.)

Command Card "Any man leaving the firing line will be shot stone dead" Any Guard unit within one hex of a Commissar can ignore a retreat result.

A basic Guardsman has 1 dice for defense.

Now I am waiting for Deathwatch Overkill to see which rule set I like better. My copy should be arriving any day now.

I am not doing the Badab war I am creating post Hersey forces right after the 2nd Founding of Marine chapters. Please keep posting what you have accomplished it is an inspiration. I am concentrating on the following…

#1 Crimson Fists ( In Corvus Armor with beakie helmets)

#2 World Eaters ( In older armor variants but now have gone over to the worship of Khorne)

#3 Khornate Bloodpact

#4 Imperial Guard (based on Jes Goodwin art I might post the first test miniature this weekend)

#5 Genestealer Cult

After that I have a bunch of 40K projects all small and heavily converted with lots of personality.

Pizzagrenadier18 Mar 2016 9:37 p.m. PST

Dragon Gunner: I'll be working up a conversion to tabletop soon and when I get my next game in, I'll post an AAR with a description. Not sure when that next game will be but probably within the next week or so.

I like your ideas for the IG and especially for playing that timeline of right after the Heresy and second founding. One of my back burner projects is a Crimson Fist force to go against my Orks also using BaC rules. I haven't even thought about how to do Orks yet…that will take some thinking :)

I have a ton of other 40k projects as well. Penetinet battalion to go against my friend's Commissar led MP force. Orks. a Rogue Trader/Missionary crusade. Some post Badab fallen to Chaos marines and their cultists… too many projects…

I'll keep the files coming and update the blog page as I do. Hope they work out for you!
