So I've been finishing up a few Soviet units for Flames of War, and upgrading some basing for some figures as well. Unfortunately my old basing called for as small a base as possible. My new basing calls for a unit ID at the rear of the stand. The old stands often don't have room for the ID tag. So now I have to decide whether it's worth re-basing or not before I get too far.

I'm thinking about slightly larger bases, and maybe using just a few standard sizes instead of bases sized to the vehicles. Something about standard base sizes appeals to my eye…

Why not glue a piece of heavy cardstock to the bottom of your existing bases and paint and sand it to resemble the existing bases? Save a bit of room on the cardstock for the label.

Now that's an idea….I use steel since my storage/transport boxes are lined with magnet but that could save me a lot of work. Thanks!

P.S. I don't use labels, just small colored beads. You can see them – mostly the orange ones – in the photos.

Nice bunch so far.

Glad to have helped.

I base all my 6mm stuff on steel too for the same reason. I use .22 guage as that is pretty sturdy and just on the edge of being cuttable using tin snips. You could go with a bit lighter steel to make cutting easier as the existing base will provide the strength that a thinner piece of steel might lack.

I buy all my steel from Wargame Acessories and already have plenty on hand for what I need….

Yeah, I should probably just order bases from Wargame Accessories. Cutting, unbending, filing, and priming my steel bases was pretty labour-intensive.

Thanks for the tip.

One can never have too many Soviets…
