Last year, I taught a case study on the Zulu War to the students in my Military History senior elective. The unit was a hit, and I understand that our lacrosse team took to using Zulu war chants. It was a natural choice to run the unit again. The class is smaller but I the students have a lot of intellectual firepower. They enjoyed the 1964 movie and reading about the warring sides and the decisions they made.

And then of course, while they are busy writing their essays, it is time to play out Rorke's Drift on the tabletop…

Your students are very fortunate. That terrain and those figures are as good as anything you will see at a convention. Great stuff and great history. Tell them to work thru "Washing of the Spears."

Wish I had a teacher like you when I was in HS.

Esquire, I love "Washing of the Spears." It is a book that was way ahead of its time in terms of considering African sources and perspectives. However, the book is so expansive, that I have a hard time finding 10-12 page bits that would make good nightly assignments (I aim for five source readings for each case studies). Ian Knight tells more approachable stories for high school kids,in my opinion, so I tend to favor his texts.

79th, I have to laugh every time students see my setup and say "That's so cool!" Where were these kids (especially the girls who say it!) when I was a nerdy miniatures-painting high school student? :)

I wrote up a post about the penultimate session which you can read here:

But, sadly, I did not take pictures of the final session, which had the Zulus capturing the hospital and yard in front of it but unable to dislodge the surviving British from their final redoubt. I called it a draw, and we all left for Spring Break.
