Hi all, I am planning to recreate the very center of the Battle of Austerlitz, reducing the size of units involved, considering my mania at 1:1 ratio. So I am starting with the attack on the village of Pratze, defended (also) by the Novgorod Regiment (3 battalions: 2 of Musketeers + 1 Grenadiers). I decided for mitres for Grenadiers (see topic on TMP) but still I have a doubt: in 1802 Alexander I reduced the number of flags to 2 each battalions, i.e. 6 in a regiment: 5 Regimentsfahne and 1 Leibsfahne, in white). Do you have any idea if the Leibsfahne was carried by the Grenadier Battalion or by one of the 2 Musketeers battalion? thanks |

The 'white flag' (Leibfahne equivalent) and one 'coloured flag' (Regimentfahne equivalent) were always carried by the 'senior' battalion--the Grenadier battalion in your case--whilst the less senior battalions carried two coloured flags. Typically, the flags were carried by a small & separate 'banner group', positioned centrally between the leading companies, whether in column of division or line formation. If you are truly attempting to 'model' this at 1:1 scale, you should review Seroga's response in his posting nearly four years ago here: TMP link . Although it refers to the post-Austerlitz period, my understanding is that Russian practice with respect to banner groups did not change. As normal Russian practice was frequently to field only the 1st and 3rd battalions of any infantry regiment on 'active service' for a campaign (the 2nd battalion typically comprised the 'depot battalion' at home), you may wish to double-check your reference OOB for the actual number of battalions of the Novgorod Regiment who were present. |

Thanks Greystreak!! I will check the link. I am happy that I guessed right for the Leibfahne to the Grenadier Batallion. As far as I know at the battle of Austerlitz there were 3 battalions of the Novgorod Regiment but with a very reduced number: I) Avant-Garde Lieutenant Colonel Monakhtin a) 2 battalions of the Regiment Novogord (of which 1 grenadiers) for a total of 513 men; b) 1 battalion of the regiment Apsheron of just 137 men c) Dragons of the Archiduke Joan – 100 men II)Brigade Berg a) 1 battalion of the Regiment Novgorod with 256 men b) 3 battalions of the REgiment Malorossja – 1011 men So I think there were 3 battalions at the battle. Thanks again for your precious help |

You're very welcome. Being familiar with military 'precedence' protocol, I'm sure you'll remember that the 'Leibfahne' is positioned to the right of the Regimentfahne, when viewed from behind the deployed battalion. |

thanks. I will make some photos as I will finish them and post to have confirm. At the moment I cut about 200 grenadiers… in few days I will reach the number of 250. |

I think according to Seroga's post the Leibfahne was postioned in the front rank and the Regimentfahne was behind it in the third rank. I believe that is also how the Prussians positioned their standards (at least I hope it is because I have mounted mine that way). |
