Kropotkin30313 Mar 2016 3:24 p.m. PST

Currently reading John Carter stories. Amazing that they first started pre-WW1. So timeless.

nazrat13 Mar 2016 3:51 p.m. PST

A. For me, although Carson of Venus comes in close second.

Just starting to read the John Carter/Barsoom series.

All of them.

tberry740313 Mar 2016 4:39 p.m. PST

(A) if only for nostalgia reasons. It is where I started reading science fiction.

Unfortunately, to me. none of them have aged well.

Personal logo miniMo Supporting Member of TMP13 Mar 2016 4:55 p.m. PST

H) None of the above.

Alas, all too Imperialistic for me. Perhaps if I had started reading them at a very young age and hadn't noticed every last -ism that the author squeezed in.

Hafen von Schlockenberg13 Mar 2016 5:12 p.m. PST

Tberfy, have you tried "Chessmen" again? Still pretty imaginative,IMO.

all of them

I've actually never read anything from him. Odd that. Plus I love Imperialistic literature! It's better than the PC "enlightened" pap and propaganda passing itself off as so-called literature today.

BTW I used to play Space 1899 if that counts. :-)

kallman13 Mar 2016 6:03 p.m. PST

Definitely A but a close second are the Pellucidar books.

Cyrus the Great13 Mar 2016 6:35 p.m. PST

(a) Barsoom (John Carter) series. Have not heard of anything after "C" prior to this thread.

Calico Bill13 Mar 2016 7:48 p.m. PST

A. John Carter

zippyfusenet13 Mar 2016 8:14 p.m. PST

A. Tarzan for me was the Johnny Weissmuller movies on Saturday morning TV, and I never read the other series.

Barsoom is dated, but in a fun way. I'm impressed that Burroughs had all those super-hawt Martian gals prancing around nekkid and going all googly-eyed and receptive for heroic swordsmen way back before WWI. Barsoom must have been primo porno for that generation. And the prose is so purple! I must return again soon to my Princess, my incontestable, my inexpressible, my inconceivable Dujie Thorax!

Lascaris13 Mar 2016 8:18 p.m. PST

I'm with the "A" team. I still like John Carter and Barsoom

B Tarzan

Mute Bystander14 Mar 2016 3:57 a.m. PST

If I must choose one it is Tarzan. I have all 23 books in paperback.

daler240D14 Mar 2016 7:11 a.m. PST

regarding miniMo's comment and Mister Tribbles criticism of his comment: If you don't wince even a bit at some things you read from the past, then you haven't learned a thing from all of your reading. (it doesn't mean you yourself are guilty of any sins of your father thing and owe reparations or the book should be banned.) "The PC" vs "Tough Guy John Wayne" views- although it seems it is presented so at times- does not have to be binary. You can be a little embarrassed of the past, yet still enjoy reading. Or you can decide it's a bit too much. It's ok.

Oh! btw, Tarzan.

Barsoom.

Winston Smith14 Mar 2016 11:20 a.m. PST

They're fun to read once you get past the "one cent per word" pulp writing style.
I've only read a few of the Barsoom books and nothing else.

jdpintex14 Mar 2016 5:09 p.m. PST

All of them, albeit Tarzan is at the bottom of the list. I recently found the mucked series and liked them a lot.

CeruLucifus14 Mar 2016 10:35 p.m. PST

Barsoom or Tarzan, can't decide.

Gunfreak Supporting Member of TMP15 Mar 2016 4:56 a.m. PST

I have no ide what you are talking about!

Are you people sayng the guy that created Tarzan (that lead to the superb George of the Jungle) is the same guy that wrote silly sci fy?

Personal logo etotheipi Sponsoring Member of TMP15 Mar 2016 2:02 p.m. PST

Tarzan
Barsoom
Caspak
Pellucidar

Those have a definite order of preference; the others, are all equivalent fun reading for me.

Dasher15 Mar 2016 11:49 p.m. PST

a – Barsoom

Gunfreak you need to read the John Carter of Mars series and forget the recent movie flop.
