I like the way he puts the writing and flags on the bottom of the bases. Looks much better on the table.

@ HindsTMP. OK if the ships can can be easily distinguished from each other, but I have about 30 destroyers, which all look pretty much the same, so my labels are discreetly placed on the top.
Nice looking fleet though.

You have to have names showing so the minis need not be moved after movement phase. For each ship I have labelled showing the name and main armament (ie Prinz Luitpold 12"). Then each ship has a splash marker marked with the name of firing ship and weight of shell (ie Prinz Luitpold 12"). The marker is placed by ship closest to firer on first ranging salvo, no modifier, then moved beyond the target to signify gets the second and subsuquent salvo modifier. This also handily shows multiple ships firing on same target modifiers and forces all players to predesignate shooting. Speeds up game.

Great minds think alike, agrippavips. I have employed a similar fire designator scheme and been likewise pleased with the result.

steamingdave47 and agrippavips:

YMMV, but I have always put the names (in pencil) on the bottom of the model hull, with no issues. I usually can remember ships based on position, with fallback being that ships of the same class are painted slightly differently, and with further fallback being the name on the bottom of the hull. A bonus is that, at my age, I need to exercise my memory (use it or lose it). For example, there were 3 ships of the Lion class at Jutland. I paint one lifeboat cover a slightly different shade, from left to right, corresponding to the order in which the ships were built (Lion, Princess Royal, Queen Mary).

Good idea with the splashmarks, agrippavips; I think I may try that myself. :-)
