I agree with Wolfshanza, Saga's not bad, but Lion Rampant seems better. |

Dux Brittaniarum Saga Lion Rampant. At least that would be mu order. |

Pig Wars. IMHO Saga and Lion Rampant aren't really skirmish rules; they use unit cohesion etc. which effectively makes them battles with small numbers of figures. (Note; this doesn't make them bad games, just not skirmish games). |

There aren't really any commercially produced and widely used ancients skirmish rules. That's why whenever there is a thread like this, the suggestions are pretty much always rulesets designed for a different period – medieval, dark ages, fantasy, even napoleonic, most of which are quite period specific. Yes there are variants for some of them for different periods, but these are normally fan made variants or collections of house rules. There is definitely a gap in the market for a more generic skirmish set of rules. |

Saga and Lion Rampant aren't really skirmish rules; they use unit cohesion etc. which effectively makes them battles with small numbers of figures. That depends on your definition of a skirmish game. Personally I would say it a game where one figure represents one man, and figures are treated as individuals (for combat resolution, casualties, etc), even if they are grouped into units. I would call Saga a skirmish game. |

Sword and Spear is head and shoulders above most of the sets listed except maybe Dux but Dux is a different type of game. Saga is very good again a different type of game. Pig Wars is a great game too but like Saga and Dux not a large battle game. Lion Rampant is good for a laugh. It is really not a good tournament game. Sword and Spear Lion Rampant
Dux because of the campaign element. Saga and Pig Wars about equal in level of fun. DBA |

I'm trying to find out more about Open Combat for the same sort of game. Many of the ones above aren't for Ancients, where there seems a big gap. Sharp Practice seems to get suggested for every period under the sun! It must be that good, or…? |

SAGA has to be up there for most playable and enjoyable. |
