I've finally finished my Achaemenid Persian army that's been on my list of to do's for nearly a year. They are mostly foundry figures(casting room and Steve Saleh sculpts) but these scythed chariots are from Essex miniatures, something I haven't painted in a long while!

Nice!

I finally finished my Persian army in January so I know how it feels. Definitely a good army for the 'wow' factor.

Yes it was a bit of a labour of love. Now I'm going to build about half as many points again in mercenaries that can be added to this or many other Greek armies, such as peltasts, thracians, Scythians etc. Should make the army as bright as a button!

Lovely work – hand painted shields look great. Thanks for those shots of the Essex chariots – as you say they do look good.

Mithradates as always chariots are fiddly to put together but they are well worth the effort. Essex horses may not be to everyone's taste but I think they are very good sculpts/proportions, especially these. I replaced the crew though with foundry figures. I think at some point over the last few years Essex have resculpted many of their figures, they are not as big or as well detailed as I remember.

I began with Essex in the late 1970s – their hoplites, psiloi, thureophoroi and thorakitai still hold up well. Like you I find some of their horses well done, others seem too long in the body.

Their early and later Saka and my first lot of Seleucid cataphracts are still around!

Shame many of their Persian figures are smaller than the Greeks.

The infantry on your blog are even more gorgeous than the chariots in this post. Looking great.
