It's a tripod to hold up his oversize Johnson!

A holder for that magnificent moustache?

I'm really curious as well. I haven't seen anything like that and the couple books of artillery I have don't list anything that looks like that for the French.

Could it be some sort of gas shells?

"Fusil Lance-Grenades Guidetti" – a Guidetti rifle grenade thrower. Old Gras rifles had their barrels removed and their stocks cut down, the firing mechanisms was retained and used. It came in two sizes. 77mm, to fire the Guidetti grenade up to 200 metres. 65mm to fire a Citron-Foug grenade up to 450mm.

Nice boots he's wearing.

Dangerous. That's what that is….

All manner of odd and unusual grenade throwers found their way into the trenches of WW1. The French even fielded bow-powered catapult-like devices broadly similar in principle to the Roman ballista.

I certainly wouldn't want to fire it from between my legs!

65mm to fire a Citron-Foug grenade up to 450mm.

I hope, for the sake of all concerned, that you meant 450m……

Ha ha ha – yes, I meant 450m
