We've had another game in our ongoing Pikeman's Lament campaign – this time the Poles try to storm a Swedish redoubt outside Kokenhausen in present-day Livonia.

Hi guys, just having a pint with my father in law and he's asking for recommendations for a good book on the Ardennes offensive. Something accessible with a good general overview of the strategy as well as the action. My thing's naval so o can't really help – has anyone got any suggestions please?

Many thanks,

Mick

Bitter Woods is an excellent recommendation.

A Time for Trumpets by MacDonald. Single best book on the subject in my opinion.

Ditto A Time For Trumpets.

"Snow and Steel" by Peter Caddick-Adams

The green-cover ones, put out by the government.

My guess is it is titled "The Battle of the Bulge", but it's been a while since I've seen it.

Superb first-hand accounts, some pics, maps, etc., etc.. Not sure if you can still buy them, but many libraries carry the whole WWII series. Definitely worth seeking out.

Time for Trumpets is my favorite out of the dozens of books I read on the battle.

Thanks for the recommendations chaps; I've passed them on to my father in law who's very grateful. He was, until this point, basing his knowledge on the film!

I would strongly recommend Snow and Steel over Time for Trumpets. Also the Green Book by Cole (offical US history) very much over Trumpets.

Snow and Steel perhaps best for general readers.
