Hi guys just used some W&N peat brown ink as a alternative to quid shade …. Good except its very glossy finish . My plan was ti finish spray them to protect them with valspar clear sealant Matt finish will this help getting rid of the shine ? |

I sometimes use Winsor & Newton peat brown ink. I usually coat it with matt acrylic varnish, also W&N. It will go very matt. Make sure it is completely dry before varnishing as it will lift if using a brush, at least 24 hours. I'm not sure about a spray. Nowadays I prefer to use Army Painter acrylic washes, they dry much more quickly. |

I give my figures a spray coat of semi-gloss lacquer and when dry hit it with a flat finish spray. That gives me a really nice egg shell look – not shiny and not dead flat – just right! Terry |

I use Winsor & Newton for shading, too. Go ahead with the matt varnish. It works great. I've had very nice results with W&N Nut Brown. Give it a try! |

I normally use Testers dullcote to flatten this out, but my top tip is to mix Vallejo matt medium with it before you apply it then it will dry matte on the model as your painting. |

Yes this was also a problem with hobby brand inks, e.g. the Citadel or Coat D'Arms inks, which also would dry shiny. (Can't speak for their newer lines of paints.) A matte spray coat should flatten it out. Too light a coat may not fully cover the recesses, but if that happens just do another light coat. Or brush some matte varnish directly into the recesses. |
