Someone asked me this and I realized I had never given it any thought.

If you're rolling into battle in a Mark IV or FT, what do you put in the engine?

Winston Smith04 Mar 2016 7:11 p.m. PST

Coal? Wood?

German Helmets evil grin.

Apparently, according to wikipedia, those two examples were petrol engines.

What was the first armoured diesel powered vehicle then?

cfielitz04 Mar 2016 8:13 p.m. PST

According to Wikipedia it was the Japanese Type 89

Yes, WW1 tanks had petrol engines. This is why tank crews were often burned to death if the petrol tank was hit or, when the petrol tanks were shifted outside and to the rear, petrol was ignited inside the fighting compartment. Exterior tanks were explicitly designated as priority targets in German anti-tank training documentation.
