Hey folks,

I've written up a scenario for refighting Braddock Down – one of the English Civil War's smaller battles in the West Country. I've based my scenario around using Black Powder with a couple of small tweaks which I've also included in the write up. Forces are represented at a 'Regimental' level.

Naturally I then played out the battle with one of my regular opponents:

And you can see the full run down of this on the blog too:

Why use Black Powder and not Pike and Shotte perhaps you ask, well personally the division of regiments into autonomous companies of musket and pike did not chime well with me when I played it, so rather than buy a second set of rules I just adapted the few elements in BP that didn't fit right for the period and away I went.

Well I hope you enjoy anyhow!

Yes, very very good. I like what you have done. Very interesting and well presented.

And thanks for the heads up on the Barratt book.

If that is the only real problem with the Pike and Shotte rules, is that not easily fixed with a simple house rule?

Cod… for me it was much more easily fixed by not buying the P&S book in the first place. I was fortunate enough to get a pre-release game with the rules at a Warlord event some years back and wasn't impressed. already had BP so stuck with it.

I hope to see some effort at resolving the issue when they release the ECW supplement. If they don't, it will be a serious shortcoming.

Your report doesn't mention whether they rescued the helicopter pilots in the end.

Oh man; I used to do Pun titles for posts all the time. How did I miss that one?!

No need for a house rule in Pike & Shotte, just use the stats for the later armies under the Wars of the Sun King section. Pike Companies and ditch the stupid Hedgehog rule as well.

Cheers

Yeah, that is a good solution too.

I also vary the HtoH and shooting stats to reflect pike heavy and shot heavy units. So 6 HtoH/1 shot, 5/2 or 4/3 this gives the commanders a few different things to think about as they are not revealed until 1st fire or combat begins

In relation to our discussion regarding separate units of musket and shot in Warlord's Pike and Shot rules; from the Warlord forums link :

Hi Ken,

I have written a number of special rules for the supplement, one of which will enable the player to use pike and shot in a combined unit. There are in total 22 lists I think, a county based campaign system, 10 battle scenarios and the siege rules.

Cheers, Chas
