If a person wanted to gain a working knowledge of the English Civil War what books would you recommend should be on their reading list? I will offer a few for starters: "Battles and Generals of the Civil Wars", H.C.B. Rogers "The King's Pace" and "The King's War", CV Wedgewood "The English Civil War, A Peoples' History", D Purkiss "Reconstructing the New Model Army", M Wanklyn "Cassell's Battlefields of Britain and Ireland", R Brooks What others would you suggest? |

A good introduction that succinctly brings out that the war was actually 4 wars in one is "The Civil Wars 1637-1653" by Martyn Bennett (Sutton pocket histories). For the tactical mechanics the 2 osprey elite series books (infantry & cavalry) provide a good primer on theory, organisation, recruiting and tactics. For more depth I'd recommend "Cavaliers: The Royalist Army at War 1642-1646" by John Barratt. It obviously only covers one side, but a great deal of it applies to both sides. |

In addition to the foregoing, I like "Edgehill, the Battle Reinterpreted." I'm always a bit nervous about reinterpretations though; some are needed and some totally daft. |

I second the Reid book, although all the aforementioned have value. |
