Coffee Table Tuesday chatter #5 – 1st March 2016
Its Tuesday which again brought our good friend Mr Briggs to our door and Custard tarts were today's sweet thing of the day. As usual, Peter Day and also Nigel Plum who now works with us here at EWM a few days a week, were in attendance. We have just returned from 2 more shows, the On track show at Folkestone, which for us gets better and better, then Cavalier at Tonbridge on the Sunday.

Italian Askaries, first ones built from master castings. I was sculpting some of these in Jamaica earlier this year, nice to see them in the flesh now.
New Early war German Africa Korps below – first views.

These are the first batch of masters out of the mould. Separate heads, and some weapons. Tom Lobley has done most of these, the weapons are just exceptional.

The Folkestone show weekend was discussed and this is a time we get to stay over and meet up with my Dutch friends who also trade at the show. Mr Jan Giesbers, model maker exceptional, book author and owner of the best "man cave" I have been to outside England. Antal Giesber's, author, raconteur and Michel Boar, decal designer and model maker exceptional plus Kase and man of deep integrity and immense knowledge., so he tells me!

Big Afro's feature in many pictures and we need to make more heads types. However, I was keen to show the first few. Mr Briggs commented that the Afro heads needs more work, and I agree. This is what makes these mornings of value, good feed back from a man who knows what he is talking about.

Folkestone is primarily a "modellers" show but with people like SHQ, Sergeants Mess, MMS and us there, plus a demo war game, more and more "war gamers" are coming and finding lots of goodies there. We talked a lot about the show this morning over toy soldiers, models and Coffee, Tea and Tarts. It was great to meet some of our long standing customers there and show them some of the new things we have been making. Mr Briggs, being a man very interested in African WW2 campaigns was very keen to take a good look at the new Early War German Africa Korps, Italian Askaries, Italian motorcycle and tricycle models we had mounted up for the show.

Jan Giebers new Fiat Tank, the revised Fiat 2000 used in east africa in the 1935. I have 2 in stock only. It sold very well at Folkestone.

Antal and Jan Giesbers, co-authors of the excellent book Holland Parrat 1. I now have some copies that I will add to the EWM web store. £18.00 GBP a set, English and Dutch language.
I thought the Cavalier show was way down on numbers attending this year? The show did not seem to offer anything "new" to help keep people there.

Nigel Plum is fast becoming the "biscuit monster" here at EWM, and has been "caught" eating up the precious supply of Chocolate biscuits for his "second breakfast", and although he does have hairy feet, he is nothing like a hobbit!

link
Nigel Plum, I suspect concealing the Chocolate biscuits again! Peter showing off the first Abbasinian Patriots we are working on.

link
Whilst in attendance, the Postman arrived with new masters fresh from Tom Lobley. Me Briggs had the pleasure of opening the pack to study the "new things" inside.
link
New masters, Italian flame thrower, more Africa Korps figures including radio operators, officer and open handed types plus 2 new heads for Lybian colonial infantry to compliment the new Italian ranges.

So, great coffee, excellent biscuits my Briggs and as always good company over which to enjoy discussions of all things toy soldiers and the like.
Right, now time to do some work!

Thanks for reading

Italian Askaris are an extremeling interesting subject…and the castings seem, from the picts, well designed…but just a suggestion…equip them with more obsolete weapons..in Italian East Africa HMGs were Austro Hungarian Scwarzlose models thanks to an immense stock captured at the end of WW1.those MGs , of course without the heavy shield, were a trademark of the appearance of practically every askari troop of our African Empire..from the conquest of Ethiopia up to WW2.certainly not Fiat were handed by Askaris…….same thing for guns..i read that in the colony only a handful of 47mm A/T guns (nicknamed "Elefantino") were sent..and, in any case, no ammunition was provided…Best to arm Askari and Colonial troops with 65mm Mountain Guns or, again, Skoda mountain guns from Austrian WW1 captured stock…
