Phalanx (the rule set released by alienstar in the early 200s, available here for free alienstargames.com/phalanx/)
Is a really fast, really fun alternative to DBA that represents certain types of warfare REALLY well.
One problem I have with the rules is that, as written, light horse armies cannot behave historically.

According to the rules, an army needs to be divided into 3 segments (left flank, right flank and center) The "breakpoint" is determined by losing units from your center. It's also difficult moving units from your flanks to the center etc.

How are light horse armies supposed to work?
Traditionally, light horse armies do not form a center, and rely on encircling the enemy, which under these rules is very difficult..

Maybe I'm missing something.
Is anybody familiar enough with these to address my question?

Let me know

Thanks so much

Austin

Sorry Austin, I canot help you :-( I have played these rules once and found them fine. The slow movement rate means the game will be over by the time you move unit between flank and centre. Shooting takes a while to cause casualties. I did not play Phalanx with light horse armies and cannot really visualise how the rules would work with them either! (they may work but have not tried it).
