Right now I'm in what I call "clean up mode." I'm finishing up loads of half started figures and terrain bits. For example, yesterday I painted two old command bunkers needing a re-paint, and a 6mm primed farm that had been staring at me for weeks. Then I finished 3 bridges I had started months ago. Today I assembled my 4Ground farm complex and did the finishing touches on the bridges. Also base coated 12 ZIS2 and 12 ZIS3 guns, and found their bases. Today I want to finish up some generic supplies for my 15mm Vikings (my Vikings are successful Vikings): baskets of goods, barrels, a strongbox. I'll finish the Soviet guns and glue them to their bases, then I'll try and get the crews sorted and primed. I'll probably be in this mode for a few weeks. Not really "finishing" any project in particular, but more just emptying the "work in progress" bin. Do you ever get in this kind of clean up mode? |

My clean up mode generally involves just selling off fallow projects. |
Saber6 | 29 Feb 2016 9:26 a.m. PST |
YES! Usually takes a few weeks to sort, prioritize and cull. Then I can grab something and work it |

Mr. Mouse, you have explained the concept and given examples. I still don't understand this "clean up" you speak of. |
Extra Crispy | 29 Feb 2016 9:48 a.m. PST |
And just to clarify: I don't mean "tidy the work bench." I'm talking about finishing stuff from the workbench, so reducing the unpainted pile. But instead of, say, painting all my Zulus that haven't even been taken out of the bags, I'm talking about finishing all that stuff that got primed or assembled, but never finished. |

@Extra Crispy I've spent the last two years and a bit finishing my dead mates unfinished pile. I have finished and sold most of it and donated the proceeds to charity. ~£10000 worth. |

Right now as I get ready to move. |
Axebreaker | 29 Feb 2016 10:04 a.m. PST |
Yes and usually when I cannot decide what project I feel like working on so until I do I then grab something from the unfinished section to get something done. Always nice to have one less thing staring at you and reminding you of your butterfly habits. Christopher |

Not really. I divide projects up into useful chunks of stuff to put on the table, then complete the project (even if it is part of a larger portfolio). |
Sigwald | 29 Feb 2016 10:17 a.m. PST |
I get in that mode now and then. I have been gaming so long and have so much stuff it has finally occurred to me that I will never have time or find opponents for all the periods and games and I'm preparing for a scorched earth get rid of all non essential stuff mode and whittle down to about 5 periods. |

Gearing up for a big one right now…. |
Who asked this joker | 29 Feb 2016 11:38 a.m. PST |
Yes. I am going to do Battle of Five Armies just to get some more of my 1/72 scale LotR armies painted. I also finished a 2X2 board for playing with 6mm armies or for DBA. That lead me to paint a slew of WW2 figures and tanks. Those saw some action this past weekend. |

Every decade or two whether I need it or not. It doesn't last too long. |

For example, yesterday I painted two old command bunkers needing a re-paint, and a 6mm primed farm that had been staring at me for weeks. Then I finished 3 bridges I had started months ago. Staring at you for weeks? Started months ago? That's so cute. I'm finishing some 15mm Prussian Cuirass and an Orc Uncharted Seas fleet that I started over a year ago after having them stare at me for a year. If it weren't for the fact that I put them in a box, I'd have some 28mm Warhammer Chaos Dwarves staring at me since 1994. And several other projects of various ages as well. I'll admit it. I'm a slow painter who's very susceptible to the "ooh shiny" malady. But I occasionally go through a clean up phase; like right now! |

Yes, often it feels good to get things completed and it's an excuse to buy more. |
Dynaman8789 | 29 Feb 2016 1:47 p.m. PST |
Yes, sometimes it lasts for up to 30 minutes too. |
Extra Crispy | 29 Feb 2016 1:53 p.m. PST |
Well, I'm well ahead of a lot of you I guess. I was inoculated against "ooh shiny" when I was growing up. So my lead pile is pretty tiny. If I packed it all up it would fit in one tub. But that includes a lot of unpainted stuff I bought as part of "deals" where all I wanted was the painted stuff. I'm actually bringing a lot of it to sell at Little Wars (look for me in the vendor hall). I'll have some 15mm WW2 Russians and Germans, a bunch of terrain, some 6mm SciFi and other odds and ends. Of course some I did buy. Like my never started Redwall project (daughter lost interest damn fast). And I have a bunch of ironclads that need paint…but after that it's mostly odds and ends…. |

We conducted a whole house renovation last year that required us to move everything out of the house for about 9 months. I got rid of about 80% of all my books, a lot of board games, unpainted miniatures and terrain. Since I'm retired I'll slowly continue to cull the collection. |
coopman | 29 Feb 2016 4:20 p.m. PST |
Yes, once a year I get the urge to throw away some of the rest of the family's stuff so that there will be more room for my stuff. |
ZULUPAUL | 29 Feb 2016 4:29 p.m. PST |
Not really, I do "clean" my painting table when I get less than 12 sq inches of space. |
Jamesonsafari | 29 Feb 2016 4:59 p.m. PST |
Yup. 'Bout once a year. Usually when I finish something biggish I'll tidy up half done units until I feel like focusing on something again. |

And here is what is on "clean up" tonight. The Colonial Administrative center:
There are 5 more not in the shot. |
PrivateSnafu | 29 Feb 2016 9:23 p.m. PST |
I like the question. I've concluded a ratio is most useful. Number of completed or near completed during a time period divided by number or total projects. That should result in a number between 0 and 1. example if you've finished 2 in the last 2 months and you have 10 total (include the 2) then you have a .2 if you are completing 5 but have 40 total then you have a .125 The one thing this does not do well is account for if you are completing nothing and you keep adding more total projects. If you have an ongoing project such as Flames of War I'd give your self one on the numerator each time you finish a platoon or terrain piece but don't drop the total unless you really are finished. Or count it completely separate. I'm going to give myself a 2/15=.133 over the last 60 days. If you drop to zero it may be a warning. |
