It looks like my son will be coming back home to live with us soon, so I'll have to pack up my wargaming table for a while.

I was wondering if someone could recommend a good strategy ww2 pc game please?

I don't mind games like Medal of Honour, but I'd much prefer something turn based where you move your forces around a battlefield. So more tactical and less cinematic.

I did play a game years ago, can't remember the name of it but I think it was something to do with Ardennes. That type of game I'm after

Thanks all.

Sorry about that.

I did have a look but missed that.

Please feel free to move this thread mods.

Was it one of the Close Combat series? Matrix Games now owns the franchise I believe.

@monk2002uk Just found out it was by a company called 'Talon Soft'.

EDIT: And yes, it seems Matrix Games have something to do with the game too. Not sure but I think they may have repackaged a few of the games. Not sure though.

Mark6828 Feb 2016 7:16 a.m. PST

It looks like it won't run on 64bit computers anyway.

Any recommendations?

Panzer Corps and Order of Battle Pacific if you enjoyed the old Panzer General games. Available from Matrix/Slitherine directly, or also on Steam. These are on the more simplistic side, but I enjoy them immensely.

Matrix Games has several more detailed titles, peruse their catalog to see what interests you. Gary Grisby's War in the East is a personal favorite, but very detail heavy.

My highest recommendation however, though not turn based, would be the Combat Mission games by Battlefront (not the mini company). Several titles available, have loved them since CM1 some 15 years ago.

Here are some games to look up that should fit your description.

Tigers on the Hunt by Matrix games, just released, closest thing to Advanced Squad Leader on a PC. Individual tanks and squads.

Squad Battles from John Tiller Software. These use the interface from the old Talonsoft games (designer worked for TS I believe) and have titles covering WWII up to Modern.

Steel Panthers WW2 at link

they also have a modern version.

Finally Matrix Games also has the Conflict of Heroes games (PC versions of the board games, look pretty good) and Battle Academy which is a light wargame but it fairly fun.

OOps and finally finally is the Campaign Series of games which probably is the exact thing you remember from Talonsoft.

BTW, the Talonsoft game you may be looking for is either Operational Art of War or John Tiller's Campaign Series, both now done by Matrix as well.

Is Combat Mission a turn based strategy game?

Mark6828 Feb 2016 7:29 a.m. PST

Great stuff, thanks all!

pmwalt28 Feb 2016 7:30 a.m. PST

I'd recommend Talonsoft John Tiller Campaign Series. It's been around for quite some time and still an enjoyable series to play … lots of options, scenarios, etc

It's available thru Matrix

Mark6828 Feb 2016 7:42 a.m. PST

Yes, I'll be looking to pick up a copy of John Tiller's series before long.

Slitherine sells a good selection. I specially like Battle Academy series: slitherine.com/games

Sliterine had been having a huge sale the past week on strategy games.

Barenakedleadies28 Feb 2016 11:12 a.m. PST

panzer corps from slitherine/game matrix. turn based, tactical and addictive! i've played it on win7 and now win10 with no problems.

Barenakedleadies28 Feb 2016 11:16 a.m. PST

dynaman's suggestion of steel panther's is a good one but i'm not sure if it plays well on win7 or win10.

How about Win8.x, haven't made the leap to Win10 yet…

8.x LOL i'm not good with computers but my wife and daughter told me no, JUST no on that.

Cheriton28 Feb 2016 2:24 p.m. PST

my wife and daughter told me no, JUST no on that.

They were correct, practically speaking anyway.

Had been blissfully happy for the better part of a decade quietly evolving through the 90s and early 00s with XP to XP3 on my Dell when it suddenly quit…then "the music died".

As luck would have it right after Black Friday and there wasn't a non-Win 8 PC anywhere in our area.."more stock sometime after the Christmas season!"

Wanted a Win 7 machine but a large workload dictated a new PC ASAP. Spent weeks adjusting to the steep (read vertical) learning curve(vis-a-vis XP) on Win 8 , with my wife hearing regular "this sucker is going back!!!" bursting from my library.

Years pass, I mellow, now tolerate Win 8 most of the time. Upgraded to Win 8.1x last year now MS is bombarding me with "upgrade to Win 10 NOW!

Funny currently I am hearing "no, JUST no on that (Win10)"…think I will wait…evil grin

The WinSPWW2 title works on Win7,8, and 10 (ran it on all three). No need to worry though, it is a FREE download (for the basic version) so you can try before you buy.

Combat Mission. Great game, try Beyond Overlord, Barbarossa To Berlin and Afrika Korps. Turn based and plays like a game of Squad Leader where you don't have to remember any rules. It has a very good fog of war system as well.

Bellbottom29 Feb 2016 6:17 a.m. PST

For pure strategy I like Hearts of Iron II: Doomsday edition.
runs 1936 to 1953

Hussar52129 Feb 2016 6:58 a.m. PST

Decisive Campaigns:Barbarossa.

A brilliant game. I'm having so much fun playing this.

Mark6829 Feb 2016 8:38 a.m. PST

Didn't realise there was so much choice

Weasel29 Feb 2016 7:20 p.m. PST

A vote for Steel Panthers (by way of the winSPww2 version). Fantabulous and about as close as you'll get to ever playing Command Decision o nthe computer.

GOG will also let you grab classics like Panzer General 2 for dirt cheap.

If you like FPS games, I recently finished Sniper Elite 3 and its quite fun. More of a stealth game than a run and gun.

That looks pretty good Simo

Is it turn based with your moves played out as in the 3d video in the preview, or is it the kind of game where you manually control individual tanks, infantry, planes etc?

GGouveia17 Mar 2016 10:29 a.m. PST

Battle Field Academy by Slitherine Software. Excellent game that feels like a Miniature battle. WARNING VERY ADDICTIVE!! Has multiplayer support as well.

West Front slitherine.com/games/ba_all
eastern FRont: slitherine.com/games/ba2ku

Thanks for the recommendation GGouveia

Battlefield Academy does looks visually gorgeous
