This has been an exciting and fulfilling playtest, with initiative seeming to pass back and forth each turn and sometimes within individual turns.
The Mahdists seemed poised to take advantage of the destruction of the Burri Gate. The dismounted Egyptian cavalry guarding the gate were clearly shaken and fired very poorly into the smoke filled tunnel where the gate once stood. Meanwhile, the attacks on the walls were pressed bravely and the second dhow moved towards the steamer 'Cairo' in a clear attempt to board her.
And then things just fell apart for the Mahdists. The Egyptian defenders on the walls threw back the attackers and the large Beja unit set to enter through the destroyed gate inexplicably routed, setting off a chain reaction of routing Mahdist units. The dhow failed to grapple the 'Cairo' and instead received a point blank blast that resulted in a critical hit that blew the dhow to pieces.
Wad al-Nejumi's forces failed to destroy the Massalamieh Gate or establish a foothold on any part of the walls. The first wave was essentially spent as a fighting force. The unexpectedly high casualties caused the Mahdi to withhold the second wave and call a council of his advisers. Gordon Pasha and Khartoum have prevailed. Photos are on this link:

Exciting stuff. Looks like you have good rules, since they allow for such swings in advantage, back and forth. Any chance of a copy being posted?

Noel, I'm using a combination of pieces and ideas from David Bickley's published rules set "A Good Dusting" and Tim Wright's unpublished rules set, "Sand and Blood" combined with ideas of our own. "A Good Dusting" is still available and well worth picking up. Tim Wright has run innumerable fun games at HMGS East conventions over the years. Although his rules haven't been published to my knowledge I consider them to be his intellectual property. If I can find his email address I'll drop him a line and ask him if I can send you a copy. We've used Tim's rules as the framework for all of our Colonial games (Anglo-Zulu War, Sudan, FFL, and Boxer Rebellion).

Jolly good showing for Charlie Gordon, what! Ragbones, as always this was very inspiring. Love your figures, love your city, love the overall presentation--it all sounds like great fun. Thank you for sharing!
