All

I am looking to buy someone a book as a gift about Nelson/Napoleonic Naval warfare, and they have a fairly in depth knowledge on the subject.

My own knowledge is somewhat limited, as I focus more on land warfare in the period, and so any suggestions would be greatly received

Thanks in advance

James

I'm no expert but I do like the look of Mark Adkin's 'Trafalgar Companion': link link

Mind you, it isn't cheap.

As to a useful and interesting book for the Napoleonic naval warfare aficionado, you might consider one of the following volumes by Sam Willis:

"In the Hour of Victory – The Royal Navy at War in the Age of Nelson".
-or-
"Fighting at Sea in the Eighteenth Century – The Art of Sailing Warfare".

I can recommend both.

I'm reading "Trafalgar Companion now. It covers more than the battle. Love the info, pics, maps and back story. It is not a book I would buy myself, but as a gift. I love mine. It looks good and has lots of info in it. Only thing is if your friend is not a British, French or Spanish fleet fan, it's a no, no. And weighs a ton, not a book to post!

Third vote for "Trafalgar Companion", not cheap but among my favorite pieces on Age of Sail.

If anyone is genuinely interested in Vice Admiral Nelson then it is probably worth reading this book.

I did.

Anything by Sam Willis. He has that rare gift of being a good writer and knowledgable of the era. His books are never dull. Sam Willis just released a book on the naval aspects of the AWI with an emphasis on the larger picture with England, Spain, and France. May not be Napoleonic or Nelson but definitely fits the genre. That is one your friend may not have.

His advisor while getting his doctorate was NAM Rodgers. I like his books too.

Lastly anything by Brian Lavery.

I would check what your friend has. He may have most of what these writers published already.

If he is a real nuts and bolt guy "Seamanship In the Age of Sail" by John Harland was just republished in January this year. That is more of a technical book on ship handling, but if he is hardcore and doesn't have the original version….
