I swear that Squadron/Group is where people get sent that just aren't quite capable of functioning onboard ship. All the stupid ideas, etc that come down from on high and get met with a round of "WTF, you gotta be shitting me! What idiot thought this was a good idea!??"

Love these stories.

Oh, I thought this was about the Cold Wars convention site status.

Great story! And entirely believable (as anyone who has served can verify).

Heard sometime similar years ago about the Chicago (CG 11). Was told this one by a another missile tech. And, as always with "sea stories", this one may the real deal, part real deal or pure BS! Be advised….

Anyway…

Chicago, at this time, was home ported in San Diego and spent her time moored to a pier off NAS North Island. The usually morning missile drill was the same (its the USN, they do EVERYTHING the same). One wrinkle was that the radar flacks would use the airliners coming into Lindbergh Field for tracking practice (made sense, the airport sits right across the bay from North Island). On one occasion, our hero of this tale was assigned on deck with headphones and mic to watch the proceedings, his job being to observe and advise the guys up top if anything weird happened. Nothing ever happened; the blue training missile would rumble out the missile house onto the rail and the launcher would go through its gyrations. All standard. Imagine his surprise this morning when a WHITE missile came out of the house. At which point our hapless observer ran full tilt forward (this was the aft mount and if the missile did go off, he would be in a very bad place) screaming "ABORT! ABORT!". One doesn't need a vivid imagination to consider the incredible bad day that downing a incoming 727 over a major city would have caused…..

LOL! Lion, how oh so very true! And the Army (where I spent my time in a basic green ensemble with a bad haircut… and Army issued birth control glasses) is just as bad…

Thanks Xin.

@Charlie 12: In the case of the Army, it's battalion or brigade staff…

And I bet said Navy missile tech needed to change his shorts after seeing that.
