Checking my Ospreys I find that I have a MAA without a number. Nowadays it's listed as MAA#9 but can anyone tell me when they started putting numbers on them ? I think my #9 must be from the late 70's but I am intrigued. TIA |

Old Osprey's didn't have numbers, they just had titles. |

True. And I have a copy of the one now sold as #9 without a number. I just wondered when they started putting numbers on the books. |

I have a few that show publication in 1977 that are without numbers. I also have some that were first published in 1976 without a number, but my copy, a reprint from 1985, has a number. So, I'd say they started numbering in the late 70's, early 80's. |

I have an unnumbered Osprey from 1980. |

Well 79thPA beats me. My oldest unnumbered is 1978 so that gives you the time frame. As I look through the collection, I run into the same issue as Ligniere i.e. on numbered editions copyright date from, say, 1977 but then statement of re-printings. But in short, any unnumbered Osprey is likely prior to the year 1980. I've inherited and purchased quite a few and the early editions are fun but certainly not as thorough as the later efforts. But all pretty good. Of course, there is that old "French blue" discussion. |

They had to issue numbers arbitrarily for the first few books as there was nobody left at the company who could recall the exact dates of publication. |

That's about right, my copy of Bluchers Army is dated 1973, and the back cover has 23 other titles already published. I am not sure when I bought it, but I suppose 74-75 is a possibility. |

Like Esquire…I have "Flags of N Wars" vols 1 and 2, dated 1978, but without a number……lots of mistakes, but no number. |

I have a large number of books without numbers. Some were reprinted with the numbers added. Some never were. I bought my first Osprey in 1971 in Atlanta for $2.95 USD full retail. For several years you could find out the numbers of the early titles in their semi-annual product catalog. |

Officially, I think Katcher's "Provincial Corps" is now #001, but it was produced around the same time as the "generic" Prussian, Austrian and Russian army books, and a few of the British regimental histories. |
