What is your preferred scale(s) for post-WWII naval gaming? |

I would choose 1:6K to scale with SSMs ranges and Aircraft strikes included. I have a few of those along with my 1941/1942 PTO gaming ships. |
John Armatys | 23 Feb 2016 11:49 a.m. PST |
1:3000 for ships, 1:1250 or 1:1200 for aircraft. |
Martin Rapier | 23 Feb 2016 12:06 p.m. PST |
On the odd occasions I do it, 1:6000th. My very favourite scale are the counters from my dog eared old copy of 'Seastrike'. |

1/3000 for open ocean actions, 1/1200 or 1/700 for inshore and coastal forces actions. 1/1200 for the Cod War :) |

With the speed and range of modern missiles and aircraft the scale of ships becomes immaterial to me. Maneuver and formation are immaterial. Unless FAC are involved gunfights are immaterial. I might as well use 1/1200 or 1/700 since the name of the game is identify and launch. BTW, I use 1/1200 or 1/2400 models. |

I have 1/6000 but since they have not been painted in the couple years since I bought them… |

Any scale. I simply use the models to represent task force formations. I then seat the players in different rooms. :) |

Allen 57 is right Years ago, when Harpoon came out, I played the commanding officer of an Allied convoy. We used 1/1200 ships, however.no Soviet ships or aircraft were placed on the table as these were hundreds of miles away, indeed, even using 1/6000 scale would still have not seen the Red Fleet, and of course submarines would not have been placed on the table. So I sat in my cabin.smoking a cigar and drinking brandy as there was nothing to do as the gamer except to fiddle with the electronic defenses and move the Allied aircraft. The ships were to all intents, stationary, the Soviet missiles represented by counters. I saw much of this later as gamers would plot on paper the ship locations with the miniatures used as paperweights The distances are too great or the combat one sided as only one side'sstuff is on the table I use 1/6000 for earlier periods but if there are air to ship battles such as Midway or the Okinawa kamikaze, the ship scale can be almost anything This is where the figures as pieces in a wargame count only as tatgets, and any pics showing both sides, Red Fleet and US on the same table is well Dadaiam or something from MOMA |

I would only use modern naval ships as naval targets for my modern aircraft, so I'd probably go with 1/6000 or the like for affordability. |

1:1 I got a rowboat with sea sparrow missle and a Bofors 40mm Autocannon. The neighbourgh got a kayak with minigun and torpedo! |

1/1250th for missile boat actions. 1/700th is nice too for the above, though you either need to really compress the missile ranges, or have a very large table – this scale is probably best for gunboat actions, and/or those battles with very short-range missiles. 1/2400th for me, for larger vessels, with 1/3000th and 1/6000th coming in close behind. |

If I did (and perhaps I will do) post WWII naval, I would use 1:1200 … Phil |

Seastrike Martin. Now your talking.
I wonder what scale it was? Fantastic game. |

I'd do it in 1/2400. Played 1/1 for a while, which was fun for shooting up carrier groups and merchant ships. |

Allen57 and Rick hit on the head. Given the engagement ranges using any kind of miniature is downright silly. My group strictly uses map plots covering many hundreds of miles. Minis best use in that case would be, as Rick put it, as paperweights to hold the maps down. |

I loved Seastrike!!! Because I only do modern coastal combat, I like my ships big. Make 'em 1/700. |

Given the engagement ranges using any kind of miniature is downright silly. Ohh – is there a scale issue? … who'd have thought it? Cheers, Charlie Phil |

1/6000 to reduce massive scale distortion to simply huge scale distortion! |

1/600th and 1/700th vessels do make great targets for sea-skimming jets, missiles, and bombs. |
