2 part question…… What is the best sci-fi setting??? What are some of the best rules sets??? |
Lfseeney | 22 Feb 2016 10:28 a.m. PST |
You really have to define what you like in terms of the fiction. Many rules work better with SCI Fantasy, or Hard SCIFI, and so on. Also what size game are you looking at playing? Is the Commander (you), on the board, in orbit, and do your troops do everything you tell them, or are they more realistic. There are some great rule sets out and more coming this year. But not all rule sets fit how folks want to play. Not a simple question to be honest. Setting: I like Hard SciFi, with a base in reality. Aliens are fine but they have to be somewhat like us, otherwise what would we fight over.
I like Star Wars, but for me that is Skirmish game not large armies. Current rules Dirtside 2 Hoping to move to PolyV soon though. |

My preferred set are Quadrant 13 – and as they are setting agnostic I have no opinion on part one. |

Of course I really enjoy my own rules "Another Glorious Day In the Corps" which work with singly or group mounted figures, and are designed for company sized actions i.e. each side fields a company or so. Also setting agnostic…. |

Well this is all about personal preferences, but my 6mm sci-fi gaming is going to be Hammer's Slammers and Traveller for the settings, Strike Legion for the rules. Micro World's post-apoc 6mm stuff though will probably add a third setting, to go with their cool sci-fi dinos. |

Take a look at a copy of the Maxim rules for Babylon 5 'Groppos' if you can find one. Both a compelling setting and 10mm rules. Alas, official army lists for Hummies, Minbari, and Narn. There's a WIP Centauri list that got posted when the line fell. Can be found, with difficulty. Don't know about you, but I'd be all about skinks vs feather dusters! Doug |

I really like Warhammer 40K or Epic in 6mm for setting. |
Legion 4 | 22 Feb 2016 2:02 p.m. PST |
Epic Apocalypse The Crucible Strike Legion Future War Commander Dirtside Polyversal – TMP link Age of Tyrants – link |

For hard sci-fi, Dirtside II is the way to go. |

If they made a Dirtside that is all dice, no chits, I'd buy a third copy :-) |

Epic Armageddon on both counts. I've tried countless rules in my 50 years of gaming, and these are the ones that have given me the most variety, tactical decisions, and enjoyment. The background provides you with the widest range of possible foes, all of whom play with different strengths and weaknesses. |

KR16 skirmish rules from Angel Barracks. A free download. AB has his own setting but this is not reflected in the rules. link Also like Alien Squad Leader. Again not setting specific. In theory they are for 15mm but I play them with 6mm. link |
Legion 4 | 22 Feb 2016 4:11 p.m. PST |
Check out the Tac Cmd site too … link |

although I loved the books I just can't get into a Hammer's Slammer type sci-fi for some reason. I think I just like stompy robots too much |

… You know what we call big stompy robots in TF LEGION … "TARGETS" … Admittedly I have about 20 or so Targets … I mean … Titans in my 6mm inventory … |

I happen to like Epic: Armageddon for a rules set tied to a specific background, even though I've bailed on GW in general. Good for about a battalion per side, the basic unit is a platoon in most armies. A few horde forces have companies as the basic unit. 1:1 figure:soldier. Also like The Crucible for Hammer's Slammers gaming. |

Ah, well for stompy robots, then there's Mech Attack, and Samurai Robot Battle Royale (by Ganesha Games). The new faster playing Battletech system (Alpha Strike?) has also had good reviews. |

no worries, it's still a rules set that I might want to check out. After all, I could still probably find a way to modify or add to the rules to add in some stompy robots. |
Drusilla1998 | 28 Feb 2016 3:38 a.m. PST |
I still like Epic 2nd edition. |
Brother Jim | 28 Feb 2016 7:31 a.m. PST |
Defiance: Vital Ground from MJ12 Games has an option to play it with smaller than 28mm minis (including 6mm). |

Have trouble with the 45 to 50 cost on Hammers and no ecopy. |
