Played out a small scale colonial action today. More pictures and details here: Anglo-Zulu War – Battle of Kafrudum – British Army Suffers Horrible Loss

Looks like it was fun. I like the use of nails and beads on the stands to mark the hits. How many hits does it typically take to remove a unit in the One Hour Wargames rules?

15 is normal but I used 10 for this battle.

Thanks for a great post showing how 1HWG can give one a quick and small solo game on very small unit frontages whilst eg watching a grandchild!

8 members of Durban Historygamers had a fantastic Isandlwana yesterday using DBC with some attrition and base width measure mods. Hair raising till the very end, as the Brits tried to get flags and waggons over fugitives' drift! The brave Zulus won 85 VPs to 74 VPs achieved by Brits!

PS on your basing issue, 3cm frontage great if you want compact frontages for your 15mm – eg 4 Zulu in 2 ranks, 3 brit inf in line, 2 mtd or 1 gun or waggon and crew!

I like seeing how others do the Zulu wars.

I think the British used Gatling rather than Maxims in the 79 war, so was this the Zulu/Natal revolt in 1906?

I am suspicious of the Zulus getting a +2 in melee, at Isandlwana, once the open order of the British troops had been abandoned, and they fell back into squares/circles in the camp, even after they were out of ammunition, they beat off the Zulus until the Zulus bombarded them with throwing spears from out of reach of the bayonets. This was without the mealie bags and biscuit tin defences of Rorke's drift.

Just a thought….
