Hey all…it's been a while since I've been on here. Real world school and new job have put miniatures on the backburner. :(

Anyway, I've been trying to figure out a good way to game some zombies. I want something simple and straightforward to play with my boys that allows for rival survivor groups to face off with the constant threat of a zombie attack. It needs to have rules for searching and maybe some sort of random zombie encounter mechanism. Any suggestions? I have all the Zombicide games, but we're looking for something a little more free flowing…

My first choice undoubtedly will be:

AKULA's "Total AR:SE" zombie rules:

Hope that helps.

All Things Zombie by Two Hour Wargames is my favorite.

Magokiron…while those sound very interesting, the rules links appear dead. I can't open them…

Thanks Ratbone…several rulesets on there I might check out!

All Things Zombie has some good ideas but… for me, the game mechanics are so overloaded with tables and charts and die rolls in such profusion that I can never hope to commit them to memory or run a game without constant, slow trawling through the rulebook. And these mechanics are too firmly tied into a single setting that is not easily transferable to different scenarios or "universes."

I have taken concepts from ATZ and incorporated them into home-brewed rules.

I'll second ATZ. Most of the charts are not used in the main sequence of the game. They are usually for between game events or for specific occurrences.

My favourite is 7ombie TV by Crooked Dice.

I use ATZ with the ATZ cards. As a result I find I only ever use the QRS at the back of the book.

Correct. And most of the tables are easy to memorize as well. Shooting? Miss on 7 or less, hit on 10 or higher. 8 and 9 is usually a miss if target cover or rushing the shot.

There are stop boxes with little exercises for to do and review. Makes the game easier to play.

Another vote for 7ombieTV. Has a great look and feel, and readily adaptable.

I have to throw my lot in with ATZ. They are was to play and can be easily picked up by new players.

Mein Zombie from ODGW. Easy to learn, easy to set up and fast to play

capncarp16 Feb 2016 6:54 p.m. PST

My #1 rule: Never French-kiss a zombie.

All Things Zombie by Two Hour Wargames.

Honourable mention goes to Akulas Total Arse rules (if you can find them).

It really depends what you want from a game. I like proper stat lines and robust conventional rules sets.

ATZ is kind of awkward if you are expecting, say, Mordheim with zombies.

I can't say that I particularly enjoy ATZ, but that is only due to my personal preference… The rules are well written and make sense within the context of itself.

Come play Mein Zombie at Cold Wars. We always have a great time. Good for kids and Big kids alike!

Seems you have a lot of choices, also Mantic and Warlord Games are presenting Zombies skirmish games, the one from mantic has the walking dead license

link

Warlord games has found a way to use the Wargames Factory zombies and survivors plastic set

link

I will go for the Warlord one because it seems to be playable also solo, which is a nice feature

All Things Zombie is your best bet. Playable competitively, cooperatively, or solo. It does have quite a few charts, but there are only a couple that you will really ever use with frequency. The rules are easy to learn and are compatible with just about every other rule book produced by Two Hour Wargames.

Ranger32219 Feb 2016 10:05 p.m. PST

Thanks everybody! The Warlord game looks really cool, but it won't be out for a while…and I already own the men, women, and military survivor sets. The bikers look cool though…

I printed out the Total AR:SE rules (thanks Zephyr!) and I'm going to check out the ATZ rules if I can find them.

Thanks again!

Whoops! Correction: I own the "Mars Attacks" military set from Mantic…
