Mute Bystander | 14 Feb 2016 2:13 p.m. PST |
A or B or C. Depeding on what colors I plan to paint the majority of the figure. |
MajorB | 14 Feb 2016 2:15 p.m. PST |
White, unless the figure is going to be mostly white, then mid grey. |

Usually black, o0ccasionally white, but I have tried undercoating in brown, which works well for eg barbarian tribesmen where most things like belts, weapons, shield backs etc are brown. |

A but my art student graduate niece does tell me grey would be better |

D prime – Whatever color will best compliment the final piece. I tend toward red-brown for people with lots of flesh exposed. Greys are good for postapoc figures and vehicles. I like black for figures that need deep shadows and darker coloring and mechanical stuff. White is best for thing I want to pop or to be bright (modern colors). |

Flat white. Had some minis off ebay primed in black, gray, or brown. Makes some interesting changes to how the colors differ after painting, but I prefer white. |

A. for shiney toy soldires in bright uniforms. B. for figures that need a quick paint job or 15mm C. for most of my figures because I feel it gives the best color backround for most paints E. for figures that have mainly brown tones in their uniforms even though the primer is called red. |
Rich Bliss | 14 Feb 2016 6:40 p.m. PST |
Usually white except for the following exceptions: Vehicles will get sprayed the majority color, Olive Drab, Afrika Yellow, etc. White Uniformed troops will be primed grey |
Old Contemptibles | 14 Feb 2016 6:59 p.m. PST |

As i cannot see thedepth in a figure when undercoated in black, i use a or b. But with what do you undercoat? |
Garand | 14 Feb 2016 10:55 p.m. PST |
Usually A, sometimes B, C for vehicles (unless they are WWII German, then either B or red-brown primer for dark yellow vehicles). On rare occasions I'll do A for the flesh areas, mask with latex, and then go back and do B for the armor areas. That can be a bit more labor intensive though… Damon. |
War Panda | 14 Feb 2016 10:56 p.m. PST |
Depending on the type. Heroic Fantasy all white and then I use ink to shade the recesses I also use this for camo. Black for all others |
Nashville | 14 Feb 2016 11:16 p.m. PST |

Martin Rapier | 15 Feb 2016 12:07 a.m. PST |
In order of frequency, black, grey, white. For some odd reason I often do vehicles grey and figures black. |
Green Tiger | 15 Feb 2016 2:15 a.m. PST |
A, B & E(Brown) depends on what the figure is going to end up as and how lazy I'm feeling |
Timmo uk | 15 Feb 2016 3:11 a.m. PST |
A. Acid etch primer designed for difficult metals. A or C (a very light grey) on 1/144 planes. Always sprayed to get a very fine coat misted on to the model. |
King Monkey | 15 Feb 2016 6:11 a.m. PST |

steamingdave47 | 15 Feb 2016 7:14 a.m. PST |
Usually white, but for 6mm I usually use black and dry brush white. |
miniMo | 15 Feb 2016 7:49 a.m. PST |
G. Lots of different colours. Primarily white, but often any predominant colour on the figures to save brush time.

jsans73 | 15 Feb 2016 8:08 a.m. PST |
E. I use coat d'arms leather brown, as it goes on very smoothly and I find it a little less harsh than using black especially on 6mm stuff |

McKinstry | 15 Feb 2016 10:58 a.m. PST |
Really small scale stuff such as 1/6000 I prefer white as there is a tendency for the figure to look dark unless everything is a bit lighter. Otherwise, A, B, C and D depending on figure, painting goal and circumstance but generally black or grey where I'll be drybrushing and primer as a base color where I'll prime, ink wash and drybrush back up before moving to detail. If I only had one primer, it would be grey. |
Weasel | 15 Feb 2016 11:19 a.m. PST |
I used to do all black, but on smaller figures, I tend to prefer some shade of grey to avoid missing any fine detail when I paint them later. |
