Hi all, A friend of mine is thinking about painting the fine Naismith and Gringo 40 Mayans that he has, but would like to ask if anyone has a good painting guide to doing them justice. He has the Osprey Men at Arms on the Conquistadors book and the Foundry book that only has black and white pictures. Does anyone, perhaps over the pond, know of any other good sources of guides in print or on-line? Thanks |

The recent Mel Gibson directed movie Apocalypto is set in a late pre-conquest Mayan city state. There's lots of good visual material in it, though you have to do a bit of interpretation yourself (this is a hill-billy, this is an ordinary professional warrior, this is a senior officer, this is a priest, this is a merchant, etc.). Pretty good exotic action adventure movie, too: link |

There are the artist renderings in various National Geographics. |

Nikolai Grube, Maya: Divine Kings of the Rain Forest: link is a current, big, heavy, coffee table book on Mayan civilization, available at a reasonable price point. I'm working my way through a copy. There are no color-by-numbers how-to-paint-your-toy-soldier plates. But there is a lot of original Mayan art reproduced in full color. What could be better visual reference than the way they depicted themselves? |

Try doing a Google search for Maya pottery. There are countless polychrome pictures of their pottery with many warriors in them. Also look at the FAMSI site. BTW Outpost has some great 28mm Mayas. |

Thanks Guts, My friend appreciates the input. Yes, we will be watching Apocalypto again. It is a very good movie and may give a few more ideas about colours. A question now remains. To tattoo or not to tattoo? Thoughts please gentlemen. |

I work in 25/28mm scale, and I lack the skills to paint tattooing on figures that size. I know it can be done, because I own a few figs that others have painted with that effect. If you can do it well, you'll impress the heck out of me. |

Plenty of national geographic and other books which can be found in a library. |

Go to the Outpost Wargames Services site: link Click on Mayan from the Ranges section and scan down the page to the galleries of Messieurs Spindler and Morlec. Some good ideas there. Also the Outpost figures are nice and well detailed. They are Late Maya and can clash with your conquistadors. |
