I was wondering what colours people favour for the musket slings of their various units? I think the British generally used whitened leather and from what I can tell most of the German troops used natural leather but what of the Patriots/Continentals? Were whitened leather slings issued to any units or is natural leather or maybe even some form of canvas/linen more likely? |

For some reason I want to say the German slings were red. The British and American were buff (white) leather. link link |

Thanks historygamer. I've always assumed that the German slings were reddish leather rather than leather painted red but some of those contemporary pictures do make you wonder. |

I think that some artists have just heard "red leather" and assumed it was coloured. |

As far as "German" units are concerned, it all depends. Either on the state or/and on the year. The Bornemann pictures (1769) show "white" slings, the Darmstadt manuscript (1786) shows "red" ones, both for Hesse-Cassel soldiers. The change must have happened some time in between. The "red" of contemporary Hessian illustrations (which are not really contemporary, being 1786 or later) is just "artistic license" (or the watercolour at hand). If I want to paint "red" leather I use Pozzeoli earth (a brownish red). Does that help? |

Thanks SM and Fridericus. I'll probably stick with reddish-brown (probably Vallejo 'Red Leather') for the German units and white for everyone else. |
