I was watching my DVD of "The Crossing" the other night and noticed at least three different flags carried by the Americans. Anybody who has seen this know which ones they are? One looked like the Fort Mifflin flag. One was one of those solid colored red flags with a scroll in the center to put the name of the unit on. I don't have my books with me but you know which one. There was one that was white with a motto written on it but can't read it. Are these historical to the battle or something the Director and/or the Historical Advisor picked out, that could have been used there? On what basis were these chosen? |

I haven't seen "The Crossing" for some time, but I do remember some things, good and bad. For instance, I can overlook the appearance of the Hessian fusilier regiment von Ditfurth. No, it wasn't one of the two fusilier regiments present at Trenton. But apparently there are some dedicated reenactors who portray the von Ditfurth regiment and they were used in the movie. No problem. However, earlier in "The Crossing", British soldiers appear in the uniforms of the SYW/FIW. That just ain't right, even if the producers of the movie had limited resources. I could mention other things, but that's enough. My only point is, be careful about movies. For what it's worth, I enjoyed the mini-series "George Washington" from the 80s more than "The Crossing." The GW mini-series wasn't perfect, but it got a lot of things right at the same time. I got the impression that it was more of a labor of love than "The Crossing" (even though the GW series also featured the von Ditfurth regiment at Trenton, again forgivable.) |

Small budget Hollywood productions do uniforms on the cheap. And why shouldn't they? 0.01% of the movie going public actually care about such trivia. First thing is to see what's available at the local Costumes R Us. But wait! There's a local reenactor group, and we won't have to pay for uniforms! Just give them a nice box lunch. Hoagies don't have to be served hot. And these Yankee guys have a flag. How nice. Seriously… I think the red flag is the 9th Pennsylvania, or something from Richardson. |
