All,

I didn't get anything wargaming related done this past weekend, we were out of town for a funeral again. And I've missed work the past couple days being sick; being out sick is usually an opportunity to get some painting done, but this crud has really had me out of it. I've spent about 90% of my waking hours lying on the couch with the baby. I did, however, manage to get up and paint up a trio of test troops for an upcoming campaign I have planned.

picture

Here are the three troops, all the same pose of a Peter Pig 15mm US Marine Corps rifleman. They are in chronological order from right to left, with right being the Guadalcanal Marine, center being the Climbing the Solomons Marine, and left being the Central Pacific Marine.

To see more pics, and the outline for my new campaign concept, please check the blog at:

I'm also looking at some air gaming with 1/600 USN/USMC vs IJA/IJN, which is all ready to go except for some later US aircraft; some torpedo boat action (I have a bunch of USN and IJN stuff that needs to be assembled and painted); and some surface action (I have a bunch of Axis and Allies War at Sea prepaints ready to go). Coming soon.

V/R,
Jack

Wow, repainting them for each phase of the campaign? That's dedication…

That's Jack for yeh. Watch for the facial hair growth too

Nice job on the evolution of camo. I noticed the changes when watching Pacific. What did you think of that show BTW. I think your Grandpa found there?

Hope you're feeling better.

They look good.

At the risk of getting some abuse I would say they look really good Jack. Also glad to see your bases would do for a whole battle and not just on the beach landing. All you need to do now is repeat the work 100 times!

We all know Peter Pig's the finest pork out there Martin but go easy on praising Jack's painting skills :)

"fought" there…just in after a couple of jars! Hence the misrepresentation of letters :(

Thanks everyone! Don't know about dedication, probably just being cheap ;)

And Martin, whatever Brookhurst is asking for, get it to them in a hurry! At least some of it (some USMC and Japanese) is mine! ;) Great figures, as always, should have the first platoon (for Guadalcanal) finished and posted soon (minus the gun crew I'm waiting on, plus the Stuart I need to paint).

Panda – Yes, my paternal grandfather was on Bougainville, Saipan, and Okinawa in the US Army, while my maternal grandfather was with PT Boats in the Solomons and Philippines. Regarding "The Pacific," I was thoroughly let down by the early episodes covering Guadalcanal, I thought they could have been done so much better. I'm very well read on the campaign and even I had a hard time keeping up with who was who and what was going on.

It was like "look, there's some Marines walking around, there's Chesty," then it was dark, Marines huddling and whispering, a bunch of firing, then some Marines sitting around the next morning. Then it was over and they were in Australia; now Australia was a great time for 1st MarDiv (and their descendants ;) but I didn't need so much 'down time.' Similarly, Cape Gloucester wasn't done very well either, and it aggravates me so much time was spent on Leckie, who was kind of a shitbird.

But where the story really picked up was with Sledge's accounts of Peleliu (Leckie's folded in here) and Okinawa, great battle scenes. I personally enjoyed the ending scenes of the Marines going home on the train, struck a nerve.

I cried laughing when I read this :D …ohh dear…you Marines have a certain way with words :)

Wow amazing service from your family Jack.

I have to say I loved Band of Brothers and felt very let down after the first 4 episodes that I stopped watching it. I know it and have never finished it. Maybe I should

Panda- in my defense, I thought that would get *bleeped* Now it's too late to edit; I better not get DHed! I would highly recommend finishing The Pacific, it gets pretty damn good.

Kyote- see, I like most any figs with packs on, and even WWII Marines wore them. You drop them on contact, but they were always worn on long patrols and coming ashore. My only lament about the packs is they don't have the e-tool and shelter half on them, which was so iconic.

I'd read all the books, too (Guadalcanal Diary by Tregaskis was the first 'real' book I ever read, in 1st Grade no less!), so yeah, you could follow, but my point was it could have been done so much better. The lack of character development and jumping around really hurt it. I think that's partly why it gets better later, they're only following Sledge, every one else is gone, so you actually get to know him and his squad mates.

I remember re-reading his book while I was in the Marines: he really has some unflattering things to say about non-grunts. I remember thinking 'ain't that rich, a mortar troop making fun of non-grunts ;)

V/R,
Jack
