Do people generally use empty bases to fill up the holes in movement trays? It seems a simple idea, but I don't see it very often. However, the visual appeal greatly is improved. My example here: link |

That a really neat idea. They look really sharp. |

No, but then I never remove figures. Too much work to paint them to begin with to have them live in a box off table! |

If you never remove figures you can not see the attrition and have to use markers (cluttering) or bookkeeping time (wasting hastle). Not very realistic looking in my opinion. Single basing allows you to swithch from any rules in a breeze, thanks to movement trays. And therefore this is a simple and beautifull idea. Too much work to paint ? So you just paint whatever you can not avoid painting, and do not bother about the overall look of what you are painting it for ? May just as well leave out all landscape on the battlefield. Off table ? Of course, until the first casualty, then you'll need it…. |

No I mean I put in too much work painting the figures (not the base blanks) to want them to go off to the box before the game is over! As for attrition, that's another whole bag. I actually *prefer* rosters over chits, markers, tokens, beads etc. etc. Plus it preserves the fog of war. Nothing worse than your opponent calculating that they only need to get 1 more hit on this one specific unit to cause a morale check for that wing. With a roster you know you've hit it and done a few hits elsewhere but you;re not *certain* how close they are to breaking/morale check etc. Much more realistic IMO. |

I agree with not removing figures. In many periods, unit frontage didn't change as a unit took casualties, and the opponent wouldn't know how many casualties had been caused anyway, just whether the enemy is looking confident, wavering, or running away. On the other hand, if you do want to remove figures, filling the holes looks much nicer. |
