So, what is out there for MAW uniform references?

While other works may have a chapter here or there, or there may be a magazine article on the subject, what other printed uniform sources are you aware of, particularly in English?

I think the four you have listed pretty much covers it. In the Santa Anna rules there is also uniform info, but really it a compilation of other sources, mostly the ones mentioned. I would love to buy The Mexican Soldier, but the price tag is…HIGH, and the Adams book really takes care of nearly everything one could want, IMO.

If you need information about the U.S. forces, you'll probably like "Military Uniforms in America: Years of Growth 1796 – 1851", a hardcover book with plates from the Company of Military Historians. It's not comprehensive, but the artwork and information are first rate. Eleven plates are devoted to the MAW (the War of 1812 gets the most attention in this book.) There is also one plate devoted to the Mexican army of 1836.

The British magazine "Military Illustrated" had a series of articles on U.S. forces in the MAW. I have most of these particular back issues from the early 90s. I wish I could share these with you, but here are the issues and articles I can tell you about:

Part 1: Issue 40 (Don't have this one.)
Part 2: Issue 42: U.S. regular infantry
Part 3: Issue 44: U.S. Dragoons
Part 4: Issue 34: U.S. Artillery
Part 5: Issue 47: U.S. State Volunteers

Also, issue 106 of "Military Illustrated" had two articles, one kind of short, about the Mexicans of the MAW.

"Military Illustrated" back issues turn up on Ebay. You might buy an issue or two with the MAW series and see if you like it.

Freikorps 15 once published a small but very useful booklet about the MAW, which complimented its range of 15mm figures. I once owned a copy, but it's long gone.

One more recommendation: the Time Life series on the Old West had a volume devoted to the MAW, "The Mexican War." It's worth seeing.

I don't regret telling you about the books and magazine articles I've seen. But to tell you the truth, you could end up spending time and money seeking sources which cover the same material. Coopman's link to the Mexican American War Painting Guide just might be what you're looking for, in one place.

Jeigheff: I think I am pretty well served for reference material, so don't feel bad for me. I've got everything in my original post (I think I still have my Brassey). I also have access to the Time Life book you mentioned. I'm just trying to get some discussion going on about what else is out there.

Greg Urwin's works on U.S. infantry and cavalry have a few illustrations that are nice. Volume 2 of Steffen's "The Horse Soldier" has a great deal of information on cavalry. Of course, there's the plates published by the Company of Military Historians (not in the volume referenced above, but in the Military Uniforms in America series – although there will be some overlap), as well as various articles scattered throughout the Company's journal. But again, between Field, Adams, and the Ospreys, you've really covered the waterfront.

I agree. I have Urwin's infantry book, as well as a complete set of "The Horse Soldier."

As far as actual books dedicated to the subject, it appears that there are only a handful.
