"North Korea's latest rocket launch might kick off a buildup of U.S. missile defense systems in Asia, U.S. officials and missile defense experts said, something that could further strain U.S.-China ties and also hurt relations between Beijing and Seoul.

North Korea says it put a satellite into orbit on Sunday, but the United States and its allies see the launch as cover for Pyongyang's development of ballistic missile technology that could be used to deliver a nuclear weapon.

Washington sought to reassure its allies South Korea and Japan of its commitment to their defense after the launch, which followed a North Korean nuclear test on Jan. 6.

The United States and South Korea said they would begin formal talks about deploying the sophisticated Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system, or THAAD, to the Korean peninsula "at the earliest possible date."

I hope they're going to do something to reassure the American public too, since this is certainly bad news for us.

Our only hope is that the analysts are right about them not being able to miniaturize a warhead small enough to put on one of those missiles, and given their progress thus far, I suspect they may be wrong about that too. No doubt, given friends like the Pakistanis, we could be in trouble.

How do we know that 'meteorite' that killed that guy in India wasn't their satellite?

Money, trade, even the internet, passes through China to get into North Korea.

If the USA was serious, they'd sanction the Chinese companies and businessmen responsible for continuing trade with this rogue nation.

As an aside, my phone woke me up Sunday morning with a very distinctive emergency warning alarm. I sent my GF a text and checked a chat group of some friends…turns out it was because of the NorK missile, which flew in the general direction of Okinawa.

Got to hand it to the Japanese, their emergency warning system is pretty damn nifty. Tsunamis, earthquakes, missile launches, all go straight to your phone (even though my phone has a custom non-Japanese ROM) and blare an alarm accompanied by a paragraph of Japanese text.

Looks like local anti-missile defenses in the region will be beefed up, and supposedly has the Chinese hopping mad, which is a plus.

Well I remember a time when the party line was that the Norks won't get nucs. Then … We even paid them to stop attempting to a few decades back. Now we hope they don't get their version of an ICBM.

Hmmm … does this not sound something like the recent Iran nuc deal ? And Note : both the Persians and Norks are lab buddies when it comes to developing nucs, etc. … Intel says Iran had scientists, etc., in North Korea for this launch.

So Yes, I think the Persians will follow the rules laid out in the Nuc Deal. I also believe in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny.

The only thing the US civilian leadership is serious about it the next election.
