I placed an order for what I think were originally Houston's 1/1200 Civil War ships with Stone Mountain. Based on some very old 1/1000 later ships, I was expecting some rough models (which is ok, since I was intending them to be for a quick game with friends). However, I am very pleasantly surprised-- and pleased-- at the quality of these vessels. Perhaps not Langton level, but quite adequate indeed. A bit of flash on some of the resin castings, but easily removed. Highly recommended, especially considering the price per ship. |

Resurrecting an old thread to get this posting into future Google searches. The Houston's ACW ironclads are sold by Wargaming Miniatures (the current home of Stone Mountain miniatures), and are advertised as 1/1200 scale, but that is a misstatement and I wish they'd correct it. The models are actually (very roughly) 1/1000 scale, like all the other old Houston's models. They are much bigger than ships of the same classes from the other 1/1200 manufacturers (Navwar, Langton, Red Eagle (old Skytrex), Thoroughbred, etc.) and do not mix with them on the table. If you buy into the Houston's line, you will have to buy all of your ACW ships from this line. Also like the other Houston's models, the proportions are sometimes off a bit and the scale is not precise, so some ships are larger or smaller or slightly odd looking. Each is much more an "artistic rendering" of the subject than a scale model. On the bright side, I'm not criticizing the miniatures at all. I think the sculpts are delightful and reasonably detailed, the ACW range has almost all of the ships you could ever want, and I agree the price at Wargaming Miniatures is hard to beat. If I hadn't been mislead by the misstated scale on the Wargaming Miniatures site, I'd probably have made a substantial investment in them (too late! I have too many Langtons already…). I have a growing collection of the Houston's 1870-1890 ironclads (still available from Great Endeavors) and I'd be happy to supplement it. - Ix |
