My next little project will be to do an AB French Dragoon Regt. AB shows both an Eagle Bearer and a Guidon Bearer. So far I can't find anything on the Guidons. Were these issued by squadron or what? Finally, any info on where I might obtain 15/18mm Guidons. Thanks in advance! Best Regards, John |

The standards of the French Dragoons under the Empire were in the form of Guidons (swallow-tailed); otherwise their design was the same as the usual French flags of the era. The number issued per regiment was the same as the number of Eagles. This was originally (1804) 1 per squadron; later all but one were returned to the unit's depot for safekeeping. |

On the AB website the photo of dragoons shows a square or slightly rectangular flag with a white ground and a border of alternating blue and red bands. There some sort of insignia in the middle of the flag. Any ideas of what this might be?? |

Yes, no – depends on what year you mean. See the Vexillologie française site for the Standards of the 5th Dragoons thru the years: link link |

all you have to decide what time period, up to the introduction of the eagle, use the standard bearer without eagle. The swallow tailed dragoon standards were in use till 1812 when they were replaced by the 1812 pattern standard design. I did have a look at the gallery of Eureka, I cannot make out the end of those guidons. Camclod did provide usefull links to show the development and change of French Dragoon standarts |

I really don't fancy trying to get those swallow-tailed fanions printed and getting them folded, glued and both sides matching, especially on 15 or 18mm figures. |

I don't cut out the tails until it's happily matched up and glue dry. Phil |

Valmy – thanks for that tip!! I hate doing flags anyway and this will make it easier I'm sure. |
