After playing Frostgrave I'm looking for ruleset for playing small warbands but not wizzards oriented. I'm thinking about 6 to 12 minaitures per side. Without official setting. I want playing Conan theme warband, Lizardmen, Arachnid Warriors or Black Company. I think about Otherwolrds skirmish and Song of Blades and Heroes. Both looks promising. Maybe someone plays both and can describe their pros and cons. or point differences between them. |

Just so you know, Advanced Song of Blades and Heroes is out now. It is not a replacement of the original, but rather has an expanded magic system, so more spells, magic armor, etc. Plus there is a new, optional reaction system that builds on the original activation system. From the sound of it this is probably similar to Battlesworn, but more in line with the original activation method (rather than bidding). I can't help on your main question as I have never played Otherworlds skirmish. |

Bogus law, I have played both, and while I am currently preferring Otherworld Skirmish (we played a big dungeon crawl this weekend) I think either would work. Otherworld offers a little more variety with stats and abilities, SOBH only has Q and C with most figures Bing a 3 or 4 in each of those. In my opinion Otherworld Abilities are a bit more diverse. I am not the biggest fan for Skimish having just a single opposed D6 determine the whole attack outcome (like DBx, I like this system for big armies but doesn't feel right for Skirmish). I like the SOBH activation, offers some risk/reward options. Otherworld is fairly static, but leaders can add some flexibility. I don't know your gaming style and what you like but if you can get a cheap electronic copy of SOBH and see if that suits your fancy I would go with that. Personally I am a rules hoarder so I have no problem buying multiple sets to see what feels right for me. Chris |
