I am writing a science fiction setting and I am considering using Star Fire for ship combat and the warp point concept for space travel.

There are a few rules version available and I am wondering if anyone can give me recommendation on the version?

I seem to recall some people liking the 2nd version best.

I have a preference for the second version. What would become the next to latest version was used extensively by David Webber – including the background.

Thank you so far on the version matter/

In case you've not run into these, discussions of versions:
link leading to link

From first to second is a pretty big jump, As this is an add on to an RPG, I'd tend to first, with some Nexus additions if possible, but that can all be difficult to find.

Comparisons to Star Fleet Battles is appropriate: a nice, simple little system with some holes needing filling, which generated a bit of a monster.

As I got off the transition to monster fairly early, I imagine that speaks to how shallow a fan I must be.

Thanks for the links down memory lane. Never knew there were so many versions. I ran a campaign back in the mid 1980s using the 1st three booklets (but not the background, just the starship rules). Somewhere in the attic, I guess.

Did read most of the novels. Some better than others. Insurrection I thought was rather good. Up in the attic as well, I guess.

I LIVE vicariously from tales of campaigns (I've been known to try to run 'em, but the failure is massive AND ugly.)

If you ever feel like trotting out a remembrance or even transcribe some of your old note, I for one would attend rapturously.

Edit: And Insurrection is the one I couldn't get going on. I've commented on Mr. Weber's writing elsewhere, but could put that aside if I had the familiarity with a campaign to bolster the experience, and I read all the game material first.
