I'm looking to expand my ACW ships to include the actions around coastal Carolina. I'm having trouble identifying ship models that would be suitable for the Mosquito fleet and some of the other lessor known craft that fought in that theatre. Can anyone make any recommendations of which models currently being manufactured that make work?

I looked at this for a good subject to make ship models for but from a wargaming point of view it would be pretty one sided as the union fleet available was vastly superior . This kind of action is a lot more appealing than ironclad v ironclad to me . Most ACW naval wargames I see look a bit contrived with monitors hammering casemated ironclads to no effect.

I'm not sure what happened to the topic title since it clearly showed up when I typed it as "Mosquito fleet and other coastal ships."

wargamer6: I understand what you mean exactly. I am looking to put on some scenarios where blockade runners need to get past the blockaders and some of the smaller confederate ships may have come out of harbor to support the blockade runner. I am particularly interested in the actions along the North Carolina coast and sounds. These seem to have a pretty good variation to them and lend themselves to a number of very plausible what if scenarios.

You have probably seen this site, its such a great link for the Mosquito Fleet describing all the ships, I have managed to find pictures for half of them already .

I suppose you could run games like the capture of USS Fanny and similar actions with these ships , You have piqued my interest. I am not sure about assisting blockade runners escape as they left under the cover of darkness but I suppose you could use ships to take on an unwary inshore blockader

Thanks wargamer6, I had not found this site. From the descriptions and pictures on this site I should be able to recreate the mosquito fleet using other similar looking ships as stand-ins. At least until some one makes them. Again thanks.

G.

I'm not sure what scale you are looking to game. The mosquito fleet could be modeling using some of the small ship castings in 1/600 Bay Area Yards has a model of CSS Fanny and the armed tug Reliance.

Thoroughbred Figures pack TS20 has small tugs that would be suitable as well as barges.

Peter Pig have a couple of useful models including USS Fuschia and CSS Drewry.

And of course, use a mix of gun emplacements to help balance the game with the generally larger, better armed Union ships.

Or just release the Albemarle on the them!

The sounds of North Carolina are a great area for ACW naval gaming. Use lots of shallows and some obstructions.
