Nah, half the fun is trying guess where the other guy will go. You can also use altitude to reduce collisions. |

Mid-air collisions were quite frequent during World War 1, especially during dogfights and close formation flying. The great German flyer Oswald Boelcke was killed after a collision with another German pilot Erwin Bohme during an engagement with British aircraft in 1916. Our gaming group experiences collisions nearly every game, even using altitude rules. It just happens. |

That many collisions? What rule set were you using? In scale, the bases do not represent the size of the aircraft only the stem would. You can overlap bases in WOG rules. |

Wings of Glory WW1 rules page 16 states that two overlapping planes collide if they are both at the same altitude and they both have climb counters or both do not have climb counters. There is no mention of the stem being the exact aircraft position. We discovered that aircraft flying in close formation can avoid collisions if they remain at slightly different altitudes. However, during dogfights, all bets are off. The helter skelter nature of air combat leads to all sorts of mishaps. They don't call it a dogfight for nothing! |

We use a modification in which the stem as to overlap the opposing base. It reduces the frequency, but it still happens quite often. We saw something like a total of 6 collisions in today's games. |

Bearserker, if you are happy with the amount of collisions that are happening then by all means keep it going. But, six collisions in one game seem to be a few to many for me. |

It all depends on your definition of frequent. Reading through the losses of Jastas during the war and the thousands of air to air combats that happened I think the frequency rate was lower than I would suspect. Sure it happened, but not the amount six or even once per combat. But, like my previous posting if that gives you the right feel for the game I'm not the one that wants to overturn your boat, but it does not give the right feeling for me. |

If the frequency of air collisions is upsetting, then by all means, modify the rules. I agree that 6 collisions is quite excessive. Sounds like aerial kamikaze day. In my opinion, the reasons for high collision rates in the first world war were inadequate tactics due to the newness of aerial combat and weapon ranges, which were quite close. Manfred Von Richtofen had his own solution, which was to get above your enemy, dive down and deliver accurate fire from 100 yards or less, then swoop back up and do it again. this tactic would indeed reduce the chances of collisions as opposed to twisting and turning on each other in hopes of getting that kill shot needed. Either way, these were very brave men indeed! |
