I've always loved the history of the Egyptian and British campaigns in the Sudan and have been collecting figures and playing games for a long time. Not as many games as I'd have liked, but now that I'm retired I hope to change that. Below is a link to some photos of my first attempt to set-up Khartoum. The Hollywood, Charlton Heston version of Khartoum. Ole Chuck can be seen in one of the photos, standing in a gate tower, casting his gaze towards the hills from whence the Ansar horde will descend.
The Egyptian and Sudanese infantry are old Mike's Models. The artillerymen are Peter Pig and Essex. The civilians are Peter Pig. Khartoum's walls, towers, artillery platforms, and market stalls are Crescent Root MDF. The buildings are all former Crescent Root resin.
The heavily reinforced gunboat, Cairo, and the two as-yet-uncrewed dhows were built by Master model maker Richard Houston, via PATRICK Wilson's The Virtual Armchair General.
I'll try to add more photos of the Mahdi's Faithful as they gather for the attack.

Ah, Mike's Models…Does that bring back memories! The city and figures look wonderful, and I must say the brown river looks very effective as well.

I'd love to see photos of your Ansar if you get around to it. Thank you for sharing!

Crescent Root buildings? Another fan of 15s and a nice job all around. Only thing that seemed a bit out was the overly brown river steamer but a nice model – but do it as you like it. And cosmic bank, don't you mean a "B & S"?

I'm guessing the boats aren't on the Blue Nile side of Khartoum.

Very nice set up--I'd like to do the Sudan soon.

Very nice layout, Ragbones! I too used Mike's Models years -- nay, decades, ago -- and still have a small tackle-box full of them in my hobby storage closest. Very nice indeed, and thanks for posting!

Good looking Khartoum set up and I did something similar with the walled town. The actual Khartoum fortifications, which was a series of earthen walls and redoubts, just doesn't seem to catch the right mood for the era!

Thanks for the kind comments. Mad Guru, if you ever decide you to part with some of your old Mike's Models, please let me know.

Very impressive, and I like the fact that the River Nile is a very convincing colour.

Hello Wayne – I must say a most impressive setup! Richard's steamer looks great. Khartoum also is impressive. I had many Mike's Models for my old 15mm ECW/TYW collection. Always liked them. Never saw any of the Colonials however. Our daughter, Annie, lives in Odenton. I am going there tomorrow by train for a few days to baby-sit. Would love to hear from you again – halthinglum@aol.com
Oh – was surprised to see your 15mm mounted individually!

Very nice! If you're going for the full Khartoum movie experience don't forget to use flaming torches to fire your Krupp artillery pieces. And throw those pottery hand grenades!

Great set up Ragbones, beautiful table and figs. I also did the Sudan in 15mm a few decades ago! I've since sold all my 15mm colonials save for several gun boats and water craft I haven't got around to unpacking since the move a couple years ago

Great job, looks like loads of fun! I'm looking forward to seeing the Ansar troops…

Cheers,
JB
