At last got round to finishing the base on an Elamite chariot. This is from the nicely sculpted 28mm range from Eureka. I added extra horses for 4 horse look and have another 3 in progress. This is my slow advance towards To The Strongest army which will face the nasty Assyrians. chariotgamer.blogspot.com |

Did Elamites use horses, or did they onagers like the Sumerians? |

Hi Mike, These elamites are intended for a later period (1st millenium BC) than sumerian civilization (4th-2nd millenia BC). Very nice, Colin. |

Onagers as far as I know. |

Thanks, Dschebe. Once I get past 1000 BC, my timeline gets a bit fuzzy. I hear "Elamites" and group them with a whole bunch of "-ites" and "-ns", and think "that's a long, long time ago." |

They can be small horses or mules I believe. This model probably has mules but look like horses also to me. Mules sound less threatening than horses :) Update…Model description states donkeys. Onagers are a wild related species. |

Very nicely done. I have a soft spot for chariots and love following the blog. BTW every time I see "onagers" I keep thinking Roman artillery. Drives me nuts! LOL |

Hi Colin, There is a variety of possibilities for these animals. Of course they can be mules or donkeys in case you only use them for transport purpose, I think. Why do I think they should better be little horses? War chariotry in the 8-7th centuries BC (the date of your model depicted) had been using horses for almost a thousand years. At least from the distant times the hurrites, luvites, hitites and others entered the scene in the Middle East with their two wheeled, two horses chariots. At this time (8-7th centuries BC) horse drawn chariots were of general use and real cavalry was spreading. That's why I think that a war chariot drawn by donkeys or mules should be a rarity, an anachronical use of chariot capabilities. By the way, I always enjoy visiting your blog, I love your miniatures. Thanks guys. I am happy to treat as heavy chariot for ease of rules to include all fighting capabilities. But it is good to have both mounted infantry and heavy chariot options in army list to allow choice/opinion. I imagine troops on less crowded carts would be able to shoot kneeling on the move. Who knows, they have been trained to do so. My Blog has been great to share the hobby when gaming oppertunities are rare. |
