YouTube link I googled the historical personality and found out about a really interesting event from The Civil War period. I admit I have never heard of it before.

Parts of the movie are being/were filmed on location here in Mississippi (Jones County), including scenes filmed in Newt Knight's home, which is still standing. Tells a rather unknown (outside Mississippi and the deep South, that is) story about a part of the Civil War that is not well understood – the "resistance" to the Confederacy by either pro-Unionists or "neutrals" to secession and the war. Jim (whose great-grandfather decided not to return to the colors after surrendering at Vicksburg, luckily for me!)

I believe there was a similar issue in NW Alabama which ended in the creation of the 1st Alabama US Cavalry.
