Does anyone have this book either in English or German and if so can they comment on its content – basically is there anything new in it, or will it be familiar to people with access to Ottenfeld, Thummler, Albertina etc. Full title Ortner, Dr. C. (Ed.)/Fichtenbauer, P.: A History of the Austrian Army from Maria Theresia to the Present Day Thanks C. |

I have it in English. What are you looking for? There is a lot more covering the 1800's than before that time. Covers the mid = century wars quite well. Wish it had more on the WSS, WAS and SYW, though. If those are your periods then I'd recommend Dr. Summerfield's books. It does a good job of describing the differences between KwK and KuK. Let me know if you have specifics. v/r Tom |

Many thanks Tom, I think you have answered my period. It is indeed the mid-eighteenth century I am interested in, and have most the sources I mentioned – plus the Summerfields you refer to. You have just saved me from wasting some money. Kind regards C |

Glad I could help. Don't get me wrong, there are some early parts that cover those periods, but chances are you already have that information. "I" am glad to have the book for the other areas covered, I don't have much on them. My request to the HGM was to bring out some history (in english) on Prince Eughen. Afterall, they are the respoitory on original documents (well, what remains of them) for his contribution to Austrian Military History. |
